Lillian Friedman Astor
Lillian Friedman Astor (born April 12, 1912 – July 9, 1989) was the first American female studio animator, working at for the Fleischer Brothers' studio, inking and eventually animating various Betty Boop cartoons, as well as one Popeye, some Color Classics, and several Hunky and Spunky cartoons, although she received screen credit on only six cartoons in her lifetime. Personal life Born in New York City, Friedman started drawing at the age of 12 and later attended Washington Irving High School, where she studied commercial art and fashion design. After graduating, she worked as a fashion designer. Animation career Friedman began as an inker, colorist, and inbetweener, along with a classmate named Lillian Oremland, in July 1930 in an small animation studio financed by Montrose Newman working for a pilot that was a fantasy set to Spring Song. 1937 Fleischer Studios Strike
The 1937 Fleischer Studios strike was a labor strike involving workers at Fleischer Studios in New York City. The strike commenced on May 7 of that year and ended on October 12. The strike was the first major labor dispute in the animation industry and resulted in the industry's first union contracts. Fleischer Studios was an animation studio that had been founded in 1929 by animation pioneers and brothers Max and Dave Fleischer. The studio had a distribution deal with Paramount Pictures and experienced success through the 1930s with its series of cartoons featuring characters such as Betty Boop and Popeye. As a result, the company grew in size during the decade, having over 150 employees by 1937. ''Color Classics'' are a series of animated short films produced by Fleischer Studios for Paramount Pictures from 1934 to 1941 as a competitor to Walt Disney's ''Silly Symphonies''. As the name implies, all of the shorts were made in color format, with the first entry of the series, ''Poor Cinderella'' (1934), being the first color cartoon produced by the Fleischer studio. There were 36 shorts produced in this series. History The first ''Color Classic'' was photographed with the two-color Cinecolor process. The rest of the 1934 and 1935 cartoons were filmed in two-color Technicolor, because the Disney studio had an exclusive agreement with Technicolor that prevented other studios from using the lucrative three-strip process.
