Lilienthal Island
Lilienthal Island is one of the Donovan Islands, lying just north of Glasgal Island in Vincennes Bay, Antarctica. The island was mapped from air photographs taken by U.S. Navy Operation Highjump, 1946–47, and was named by Carl R. Eklund for Billie R. Donovan Islands
The Donovan Islands are a chain of about 8 islands lying well offshore, about northwest of Clark Peninsula in the eastern part of Vincennes Bay. First mapped from air photos taken by U.S. Navy Operation Highjump, 1946–47, they were photographed from the air by the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions in January 1956, and were named after J. Glasgal Island
Glasgal Island is a small island which marks the southwestern extremity of the Donovan Islands in Vincennes Bay, off the coast of Antarctica. It was first mapped from air photos taken by U.S. Navy Operation Highjump, 1946–47, and observed in 1957 by Wilkes Station personnel under Carl R. Eklund. It was named by Eklund for Ralph Glasgal, an auroral scientist with the United States – International Geophysical Year wintering party of 1957 at Wilkes Station. Vincennes Bay
Vincennes Bay is a large V-shaped bay, 105 km (65 mi) wide at its entrance between Cape Nutt and Cape Folger in Antarctica, marked by several large, steep glaciers near its head, lying along Knox and Budd Coasts. It was photographed from the air by US Navy Operation Highjump in 1946–47. The bay was entered in January 1948 by US Navy Operation Windmill icebreakers Burton Island and stations in the Windmill Islands in the NE portion of the bay. Named by the US-ACAN for the sloop of war , flagship of the USEE under Wilkes, from which a series of coastal landfalls along Wilkes Land were discovered and plotted during January–February 1840. Operation Highjump
Operation HIGHJUMP, officially titled The United States Navy Antarctic Developments Program, 1946–1947, (also called Task Force 68), was a United States Navy (USN) operation to establish the Antarctic research base Little America IV. The operation was organized by Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, Jr., USN (Ret), Officer in Charge, Task Force 68, and led by Rear Admiral Ethan Erik Larson, USN, Commanding Officer, Task Force 68. Operation HIGHJUMP commenced 26 August 1946 and ended in late February 1947. Task Force 68 included 4,700 men, 13 ships, and 33 aircraft. Wilkes Station
Wilkes Station was an Antarctic research station established 29 January 1957 by the United States as one of seven U.S. stations established for the International Geophysical Year (IGY) program in Antarctica. It was taken over by Australia on 7 February 1959. History Navy personnel from the United States constructed the main part of Wilkes in a period of 16 days in January and February 1957, unloading 11,000 tons of material and supplies. It took a crew of over 100 to erect the station which housed 24 naval personnel and scientists for the next 18 months. As this was the time of the Cold War, there was considerable concern by the United States and Australia about Russian activity in Antarctica. Wilkes was seen to be strategically located because of its proximity to the south magnetic pole.
