Lilac Domino
''Der lila Domino'' (''The Lilac Domino'') is an operetta in three acts composed by Charles Cuvillier. The original German libretto is by Emmerich von Gatti and Bela Jenbach, about a gambling count who falls in love at a masquerade ball with a noblewoman wearing a lilac domino mask. The operetta achieved far greater popularity in Britain and America than it did in Germany or France. Although ''The Lilac Domino'' became Cuvillier's greatest international hit, he won success in his native Paris with the operetta ''La reine s'amuse'' (1912; ''The Naughty Princess'' in London, 1920). He was popular in Germany before the First World War, and ''Der lila Domino'' was the first of two operettas that he wrote for German theatres. Andreas Dippel
Andreas Dippel (30 November 1866 – 12 May 1932) was a German-born operatic tenor and impresario who from 1908 to 1910 was the joint manager (with Giulio Gatti-Casazza) of the New York Metropolitan Opera. Biography Born Johann Andreas Dippel in Kassel, Germany, he initially trained for a banking career there, but also studied singing. He made his stage debut in 1887 at the Bremen Stadttheater as Lionel in Flotow's opera ''Martha'' and continued to study singing with Julius Hey (Berlin), Alberto Leoni (Milan) and Johann Ress (Vienna). He sang several smaller roles in Bayreuth in 1889, and become a member of the Vienna State Opera in 1893. He sang there until 1898 in 27 roles, including Marcello in the Vienna premiere of Leoncavallo's ''La bohème''. During that period he also sang in London's Royal Opera House and at the New York Metropolitan Opera. Palace Theatre, London
The Palace Theatre is a West End theatre in the City of Westminster in London. Its red-brick facade dominates the west side of Cambridge Circus behind a small plaza near the intersection of Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road. The Palace Theatre seats 1,400. Richard D'Oyly Carte, producer of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, commissioned the theatre in the late 1880s. It was designed by Thomas Edward Collcutt and intended to be a home of English grand opera. The theatre opened as the Royal English Opera House in January 1891 with a lavish production of Arthur Sullivan's opera ''Ivanhoe''. Although this ran for 160 performances, followed briefly by André Messager's ''La Basoche'', Carte had no other works ready to fill the theatre. The Empire, Leicester Square is a cinema currently operated by Cineworld on the north side of Leicester Square, London. The Empire was originally built in 1884 as a variety theatre and was rebuilt for films in the 1920s. Jeanne Maubourg
Jeanne Maubourg (November 10, 1873 – 9 May 1953) was a Belgian opera singer. She sang with the Metropolitan Opera in New York from 1909 to 1914, taught voice in Montreal, and was heard in Canadian radio dramas in the 1930s and 1940s. Early life Jeanne Maubourg was born Jeanne Elisabeth Goffaux in Namur, the daughter of Alexis Hippolyte Goffaux, a musical conductor, and Marie Anne Nottet. Robert Emmett O'Connor (March 18, 1885 – September 4, 1962) was an Irish-American actor. He appeared in more than 200 films between 1919 and 1950. Wilfrid Douthitt
Louis Graveure (18 March 1888 – 27 April 1965) was an English actor and baritone singer known as "The Mystery Man". Biography He was born on March 18, 1888, in London, England, as Wilfrid Douthitt. He trained under Clara Novello Davies. He made his New York City debut in 1914 in ''The Lilac Domino''. In 1915 he took on the persona of a new singer called Louis Graveure. People asked him if he was the same person as Wilfrid Douthitt, and he denied it and invented a backstory, saying Graveure was from Belgium. He married Eleanor Painter in 1916 and they divorced in 1930. He gave a recital in 1947 at The Town Hall in Manhattan, as well as other recitals accompanied by pianist Alice Marion Shaw. Early years and education Strong was born in Waterville, Iowa, as Eleanor Painter on September 12, 1885, to Mary Ellen and John Painter.
