The Ligue d'Athlétisme de la Guyane (LAG) is the governing body for the sport of athletics in French Guiana. Last president was Daniel Lapompe-Paironne. He was replaced by Gaëtan Tariaffe. As LAG is part of the Fédération française d'athlétisme, athletes from French Guiana normally participate internationally for France, e.g., in European Athletics Championships as organized by the EAA. On the other hand, French Guiana as a French overseas department is part of the Caribbean. As an observer member of CACAC, French Guiana is invited to participate at the championships, and also at the CARIFTA Games. CARIFTA Games
The CARIFTA Games is an annual athletics competition founded by the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA). The games was first held in 1972 and consists of track and field events including sprint races, hurdles, middle distance track events, jumping and throwing events, and relays. The Games has two age categories: under-17 (under-18 until 2017) and under-20. Only countries associated with CARIFTA may compete in the competition. The Central American and Caribbean Athletic Confederation (CACAC) is a confederation governing body of athletics for national governing bodies and multi-national federations within Central America and the Caribbean. Membership of the Confederation is open to all national governing bodies for the sport of athletics in any country or territory in the region which is affiliated to World Athletics. Other countries may be granted observer status and may, with permission of the Congress, be allowed to compete in open championships. They will, however, not be entitled to vote at the Congress.
