The Ligue Nationale de Handball ( en, National Handball League) is a governing body established in 2004 to administer French men's professional handball autonomously from the national federation (FFHB). It has jurisdiction over the country's top two men's divisions, a cup tournament and a super cup. Team Handball
Handball (also known as team handball, European handball or Olympic handball) is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six outcourt players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team. A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes, and the team that scores more goals wins. Modern handball is played on a court of , with a goal in the middle of each end. The goals are surrounded by a zone where only the defending goalkeeper is allowed; goals must be scored by throwing the ball from outside the zone or while "diving" into it. A super cup is a competition, usually but not exclusively in association football, which often forms the 'curtain raiser' to a season, and typically involves only two teams who have qualified through success in other competitions during the previous season. It is typically contested on a national level by two competition winners of the previous season: the national knock-out cup winner and the highest level league champion. LNH Division 1, doing business as Starligue and currently known as Liqui Moly Starligue for sponsorship reasons, is the premier men's professional handball league in France. It is administered by the Ligue Nationale de Handball, under delegation from the French Handball Federation. Founded in 1952, it is currently contested by 16 teams. Montpellier Handball is the most successful club with 14 titles, and the club which won the most consecutive titles is Paris Saint-Germain with 8 between 2015 and 2022. The champion and the vice-champion are directly qualified for the group phase of the EHF Champions League. The winners of the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue are qualified for the European League. If the winner of (one of) these cups is also the champion, the place(s) are attributed in terms of the Division 1 ranking. Since 2016, the league has had a title sponsor. The Trophée des Champions is a Super Cup in handball created in March 2010 by the Ligue Nationale de Handball, the main body of French handball. The competition usually takes place at the beginning of September a few days before the championship resumes and is therefore the first official match of the season. Philippe Bernat-Salles (born 17 February 1970) is a retired French rugby union player, usually playing as a wing. His main skill was a blinding speed, while he was also visually striking due to his unruly mop of gray hair. Early life Bernat-Salles was born in Pau, Pyrénées-Atlantiques. He went through the youth teams of Bizanos before joining AS Idron-Lee, in which first XV he debuted at the age of 16. Before starting his professional career, Bernat-Salles worked as an electrician. Olivier Girault (born February 22, 1973 in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe) is a now retired French team handball player, who is currently the coach of the Paris Handball team. He retired as a field player in 2008 after the victory of the France men's national handball team (of which he was the captain) at the Beijing Olympics. He won all three major championships with the national team: world championship in 2001, European championship in 2006 and olympic champion in 2008, as mentioned above.
