Lightsum (, commonly stylized as LIGHTSUM) is a South Korean girl group formed by Cube Entertainment. The group is composed of six members: Sangah, Chowon, Nayoung, Hina, Juhyeon, and Yujeong. The group debuted on June 10, 2021, with the release of their debut single album, ''Vanilla (Lightsum song), Vanilla''. Originally an eight-piece ensemble, members Huiyeon and Jian departed the group in October 2022. Name The group's name, Lightsum, is a combination of the words "light" and "sum", which symbolizes "things that shine small gather together to light up the world, delivering greater positive energy through a message of hope". "Vanilla" is a debut single recorded by South Korean girl group Lightsum. It was released by Cube Entertainment on June 6, 2021. Background and release On April 15, 2021, Cube Entertainment announced that it would be debuting a new girl group, the first since (G)I-dle in 2018. On May 27, it was announced they would be releasing their debut single "Vanilla" on June 10. Four days later, the promotional schedule was released. On June 4, the audio snippet was released. The music video teaser was released on June 8 and 9. Composition "Vanilla" was written by Jo Yoon-kyung, composed and arranged by Steven Lee, and J. ''Produce 48'' () was the third season of the South Korean reality competition series ''Produce 101''. It was a large-scale project in which the public "produces" a girl group by voting for members out of a pool of 96 contestants from South Korea and Japan, as well as voting for the group's concept, name and debut single. The show was a collaboration between the Mnet series ''Produce 101'' and the J-pop idol group AKB48. The winning 12 contestants, with no nationality caps, as voted only by Korean viewers, would promote as a group for two years and six months. The program itself is primarily in Korean, however staff and trainer instructions were translated onsite by interpreters. The 2022 Genie Music Awards was held at the Namdong Gymnasium in Incheon, South Korea on November 8, 2022.
