Lighthouse Hotel
Jetwing Lighthouse or Lighthouse Hotel, is a five-star franchise hotel, operated by Jetwing Hotels, located in Galle, Sri Lanka. It is just north of the Galle Fort on the Indian Ocean coastline. Geography The hotel is situated in Galle, the capital of the Southern Province of Sri Lanka and is located on a rocky promontory to the north of Galle Harbour, on a site once occupied by a Circuit Magistrates' bungalow. History The hotel was commissioned by Herbert Cooray in 1995 for his travel company Jetwings and designed by Geoffrey Bawa. The Lighthouse Hotel, as it was originally known, opened on 7 June 1997. The hotel initially had 60 rooms and three suites, two restaurants, a swimming pool and recreational facilities. Architecture The Lighthouse hotel was one of Geoffrey Bawa's last major projects. Galle ( si, ගාල්ල, translit=Gālla; ta, காலி, translit=Kāli) (formerly Point de Galle) is a major city in Sri Lanka, situated on the southwestern tip, from Colombo. Galle is the provincial capital and largest city of Southern Province, Sri Lanka and is the capital of Galle District. Ena de Silva (née Aluwihare) (22 October 1922 – 29 October 2015) was a notable Sri Lankan artist, credited with re-establishing the country's batik industry. She was renowned for her skillsets in the design of batiks and handicrafts and played a pivotal role in reviving the arts and crafts in Sri Lanka. Kala Suri Barbara Sansoni (22 April 1928 – 23 April 2022) was a Sri Lankan designer, artist, colourist, entrepreneur, and writer. She was known for her works in architecture, textile designs, and handwoven panels. She founded the Barefoot textile company, a company that is highly acclaimed for its handloom fabric. She also served as the chairperson and chief designer of Barefoot Pvt. Ltd for several years. Sansoni was said to have "redefined the concept of colour in Sri Lanka". Laki Senanayake (18 December 1937 - 30 May 2021) was a Sri Lankan sculptor and painter. Personal life Born in 1937, the son of Reginald S. Vincent and Florence Senanayake, he was the fifth of six children. His father, a planter by profession, was a Marxist and a founding member of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP), serving as its treasurer from 1935 to 1939. During World War II, his father went into hiding and was later arrested and detained by the British colonial administration due to the anti war position espoused by the LSSP. Released after the war, Senanayake's father died in 1946. His mother took on her husband's political activities and was elected as the first female member of parliament in 1947. He married Ranjini Perera in 1962. They had a daughter, Mintaka before they separated, and Ranjini migrated to the United States. Geoffrey Bawa
Deshamanya Geoffrey Manning Bawa, FRIBA (23 July 1919 – 27 May 2003) was a Sri Lankan architect. He was among the most influential Asian architects of his generation. Early life Geoffrey Bawa was born in Colombo on 23 July 1919, the youngest of two sons to Major Benjamin Bawa, Sri Lankan lawyer, who was of part European parentage, and Bertha Marianne née Schrader, a Burgher of mixed Sinhalese, German and Scottish descent. His older brother, Bevis, became a landscape architect.
