Light is a surname of the English language. Etymology Coming from Middle English, there are several possible meanings. From the Middle English lyght it means a happy, cheerful person. The Old English leoht could be a person who is ‘bright’ or ‘cheerful’. The two forms of light - leoht and lioht had distinct meanings, but became mixed over time. Middle English
Middle English (abbreviated to ME) is a form of the English language that was spoken after the Norman conquest of 1066, until the late 15th century. The English language underwent distinct variations and developments following the Old English period. Scholarly opinion varies, but the ''Oxford English Dictionary'' specifies the period when Middle English was spoken as being from 1150 to 1500. This stage of the development of the English language roughly followed the High to the Late Middle Ages. Jay Light (musician)
Jay Light is an oboist and author. He is a native of Philadelphia. His teachers were John de Lancie, Charles M. Morris, and Norman Wells, jr., all of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He is a 1963 graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music. He was principal oboist of the Philadelphia Lyric and Grand Opera Companies (1962–64) and L'orchestre Symphonique de Quebec (1964–66). He served in the U.S. Army as a military journalist and Armed Forces TV news anchor from 1966-69. Walter Frederick Light
Walter Frederick Light, (June 24, 1923 – February 24, 1996) was a Canadian business executive. Born in Cobalt, Ontario, Light served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. After the war, he received a degree in electrical engineering from Queen's University in 1949. He started working for Bell Canada eventually being promoted to the head of the engineering department. In 1974, he became president of Northern Telecom. In 1979, he became president and chief executive officer. He retired in 1984. Walter Light
Walter J. Light (1927–1979) was an American timpanist, percussionist, and drummaker. At the age of 16, he was appointed to a percussion position in the Denver Symphony Orchestra, joining his father, Walter E. Light, who was the timpanist. Timothy Light
Timothy Light (born 1938) is an American sinologist who took a Chinese name "黎天睦" (Pinyin: Lí Tíanmù). He was the fourteenth president of Middlebury College, 1990–1991. A native of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Light is a scholar in East Asian languages and literature. He served as provost of Kalamazoo College prior to his time at Middlebury, and later became a professor of religion and provost at Western Michigan University. Richard Upjohn Light
Richard Upjohn Light (1902–1994) was an American neurosurgeon, aviator, cinematographer, and former president of the American Geographical Society. Early life After studying at Culver Military Academy, he earned an undergraduate degree from Yale University in 1924 and a M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1928. He was director of the surgical laboratory at the Yale School of Medicine from 1933 to 1935. From 1937 to 1968, he was a director of the Upjohn Company, the pharmaceuticals company founded by his grandfather, William E. Upjohn. In 1937, he married Mary Meader in Maryland. Matthew Charles Light (born June 23, 1978) is a former American football offensive tackle who spent his entire 11-year career playing for the New England Patriots of the National Football League (NFL). Kevin Richard Light (born May 16, 1979) is a Canadian rower. Early life He was born in Vancouver, British Columbia but has lived in Victoria, British Columbia since 1985. He began rowing at Stelly's High School in grade 12 and graduated in 1997. He was enrolled at the University of Victoria from 1997 until 2001 where he was part of numerous Canadian University Rowing Championships teams. The highlight of his university rowing career came in 2001 when Uvic beat the University of Washington at the Opening Day Regatta.
