The Liga Profesionistă de Fotbal (''Professional Football League''), also known by its acronym LPF, is a Romanian governing body that runs the Liga I, the top professional division of the Romanian football league system. Its current president is Gino Iorgulescu, elected in 2013 and re-elected in 2017. History The first football organizational system was ''Colegiul Divizionar A'' ("Divisional College A"), founded on 5 October 1970 and led by Mircea Angelescu. Until 1990, the "Divisional College A" was formal, but without notable decisions. Gino Iorgulescu
George "Gino" Iorgulescu (born 15 May 1956) is a Romanian former professional footballer who played as a defender. He is the current chairman of the Romanian Professional Football League. Club career Gino Iorgulescu was born on 15 May 1956 in Giurgiu, Romania and started to play junior level football at local club, Dunărea, making his debut for the senior squad in the 1973–74 Divizia B season. The Liga I (; ''First League''), also spelled as Liga 1, is a Romanian professional league for men's association football clubs. Currently sponsored by betting company Superbet, it is officially known as the SuperLiga. It is the country's top football competition, being contested by 16 clubs which take part in a promotion and relegation system with the Liga II. The teams play 30 matches each in the regular season, before entering the championship play-offs or the relegation play-outs according to their position in the regular table. The Liga I was established in 1909 and commenced play for the 1909–10 campaign, being currently on the 29th place in UEFA's league coefficient ranking list. The Romanian football league system, also known as the football pyramid, refers to the system in Romanian club football that consists of several football leagues bound together hierarchically by promotion and relegation. The first three leagues are organized at a national level and consist of fully professional teams. Dumitru Dragomir
Dumitru "Mitică" Dragomir (born May 30, 1946) is a former president of the Romanian Professional Football League from 1996 until 2014. Before that, he served as the president of Chimia Râmnicu Vâlcea, Olt Scorniceşti, FCM Braşov, and Victoria București. He also sat in the Romanian Chamber of Deputies from 2000 to 2008, representing Vâlcea County and winning election twice, more specifically in 2000 and in 2004. He was a member of the Greater Romania Party (PRM) for most of that period, but resigned from the party in September 2008 and sat as an independent MP for the remainder of his second term. On 23 June 2016, Dragomir was sentenced to 7 years' imprisonment for tax evasion, embezzlement, and money laundering. The sentence was not final. He was acquitted of all charges by the Bucharest Court of Appeals in November 2018, the decision being final. The Liga 2, most often spelled as Liga II, is the second level of the Romanian football league system. The league changed its name from Divizia B just before the start of the 2006–07 Liga II, 2006–07. It is currently Sponsor (commercial), sponsored by Casa Pariurilor, a betting company with the official name Liga 2 Casa Pariurilor. Format Divisions Since its inception in 1934, Liga II had between 2 and 9 parallel divisions, with clubs divided based on geographic regions. Generally, Seria I included eastern teams while Seria II included western sides, although clubs near the center of the country are allowed to choose in which series they will compete.
