Lifers Group
Lifers Group was a hip hop group formed by Maxwell Melvins while incarcerated at East Jersey State Prison in Rahway, New Jersey in 1991. Background Lifers Group grew out of the Lifers Group Juvenile Awareness Program, a youth crime prevention program founded in East Jersey State Prison in 1976 and made famous by the documentary '' Scared Straight!'' Maxwell Melvins, who was transferred to the prison in 1987 and became involved with the Juvenile Awareness Program, proposed the idea of using music as a means of outreach and fundraising for the program in 1991. The group's music industry career began when Melvins contacted producer David Funken Klein, the newly appointed head of Disney Music Group's rap subsidiary Hollywood Basic. ''Scared Straight!'' is a 1978 American documentary directed by Arnold Shapiro. Narrated by Peter Falk, the subject of the documentary is a group of juvenile delinquents and their three-hour session with actual convicts. Filmed at Rahway State Prison, a group of inmates known as the "lifers" berate, scream at, and terrify the young offenders in an attempt to "scare them straight", so that those teenagers will avoid prison life. The documentary aired on television in the late 1970s, uncensored; it marked the first time that the profane words "fuck" and "shit" were broadcast on many networks. Some broadcasters (an example being CFQC, a CTV Network affiliate in Canada) added locally produced segments in which experts discussed both the content of the documentary and the rationale behind airing it uncensored. Penelope Spheeris (born December 2, 1945 or 1946; sources differ) is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter. She has directed both documentary and scripted films. Her best-known works include the trilogy titled ''The Decline of Western Civilization'', each covering an aspect of Los Angeles underground culture, and ''Wayne's World'', her highest-grossing film. Early life Spheeris was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her Greek-immigrant father owned the ''Magic Empire Shows'' carnival and was a side-show strong man. Living Proof (Lifers Group Album)
''Living Proof'' is an album by the incarcerated rap collective Lifers Group, released in 1993. The collective was made up of inmates serving sentences of 25 years to double-life. The album followed the collective's 1991 debut EP and their Grammy-nominated long-form video. Royalties from the album were put toward the Lifers Group Juvenile Awareness Program. Production The album was recorded inside East Jersey State Prison, in Rahway, New Jersey. A temporary studio was built in the prison, and the collective had a week to record. ''Living Proof'' was produced by Solid Productions, with, on some tracks, Organized Konfusion. The members of the collective were credited by their nicknames and their prison serial numbers. They wrote all of the lyrics and assisted with some of the musical backing. A video was filmed at the prison for the first single, "Short Life of a Gangsta". The Escorts (American R&B Group)
The Escorts, also known as the Legendary Escorts, were an American R&B group formed in Rahway State Prison in 1970. Background While incarcerated at Trenton State Prison in 1968, founding member Reginald Prophet Haynes began practicing doo-wop singing with fellow prisoners. In 1970, after members of the group were transferred to Rahway State Prison, they first performed as the Escorts at a prison talent show, where they caught the attention of Motown producer George Kerr. In 1973, Kerr returned to Rahway with a mobile recording unit, resulting in the Escorts' debut album, ''All We Need is Another Chance'', followed by ''Three Down, Four to Go'' (1974). Legacy The Escorts have been sampled by hip hop artists including J Dilla and Public Enemy.
