''Life in a Fishbowl'' ( is, Vonarstræti, literally ''Hope Street'') is a 2014 Icelandic drama film directed by Baldvin Zophoníasson. It was screened in the Discovery section of the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. It was selected as the Icelandic entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards, but was not nominated. Plot The movie follows three people living in Reykjavik in 2006. Eik, a kindergarten teacher and mother struggling to make money thus working as part time as a prostitute, Sölvi, a former athlete who now in the corporate world and Móri, an older man struggling with alcoholism. Baldvin Zophoníasson
Baldvin Zophoníasson, or Baldvin Z, is an Icelandic film and television director, writer, and producer. He was born in 1978 in Akureyri. He is best known for his films ''Jitters'', ''Life in a Fishbowl'', '' Let Me Fall'', and the television series ''Réttur'' and '' Trapped''. Career Baldvin's first feature film was the Icelandic-language teenage drama ''Jitters'' (titled ''Órói'' in Icelandic), released in 2010. The film portrays "the confusion and excitement of being a teenager". It won the Children's Film Award at the Kristiansand International Children's Film Festival. Iceland has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1981. The first film to be sent to AMPAS by Iceland was ''Land and Sons'' which was released in Iceland in 1980. Since then, Iceland has sent in a film every year. Only one Icelandic film, '' Börn náttúrunnar'' (''Children of Nature''), directed by Friðrik Þór Friðriksson, has received a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. However, a second, '' Djúpið'' (''The Deep''), made the nine-film shortlist in 2012, and a third, '' Síðasti bærinn'' (''The Last Farm'') by Rúnar Rúnarsson, was also nominated for Best Live Action Short in 2006. This is a list of submissions to the 87th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has invited the film industries of a number of countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film every year since the award was created in 1956. It is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length film produced outside the United States with primarily non-English dialogue. The Foreign Language Film Award Committee oversees the process, reviewing all films submitted. For the 87th Academy Awards, held on 22 February 2015, a submitted motion picture must be released theatrically in its respective country between 1 October 2013 and 30 September 2014.
