Libraries In The Philippines
Libraries in the Philippines, similar to libraries in other countries, come in one of the four basic types: academic, school, public, and special libraries. Prominent are academic libraries and the National Library of the Philippines, located in Manila. The university libraries of the University of the Philippines, the Central Philippine University, the Silliman University, the University of Santo Tomas, the University of the East, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, Far Eastern University and the University of San Carlos. Research institutes such as the International Rice Research Institute located in Los Baños, Laguna houses a library. Some museums in the Philippines such as the Lopez Museum have their own library. About 1.2 million volumes of reference and reading materials are available at the National Library, in which the Filipiniana and Asia Division alone own more than 100,000 Filipiniana books. Academic Libraries
An academic library is a library that is attached to a higher education institution and serves two complementary purposes: to support the curriculum and the research of the university faculty and students. It is unknown how many academic libraries there are worldwide. An academic and research portal maintained by UNESCO links to 3,785 libraries. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, there are an estimated 3,700 academic libraries in the United States. In the past, the material for class readings, intended to supplement lectures as prescribed by the instructor, has been called reserves. In the period before electronic resources became available, the reserves were supplied as actual books or as photocopies of appropriate journal articles. University Of San Carlos
The University of San Carlos, also referred to by its acronym USC or colloquially shortened to San Carlos, is a private, Catholic, research, coeducational basic and higher education institution administered by the Philippine Southern Province of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) missionaries in Cebu City, Philippines since 1935. It offers basic education (Montessori academy, grade school, junior high school and senior high school) and higher education (undergraduate and graduate studies). Founded originally in 1595 as Colegio de San Ildefonso, it later became the Colegio-Seminario de San Carlos in 1783 and finally obtained university charter in 1948. The University of the East ( fil, Pamantasan ng Silangan), also known as UE, is a leading private university located in Manila, Philippines. Founded in 1946, business tycoon Lucio Tan acquired the university in 1990. UE was once labeled as the "largest university in Asia" when its enrollment in the past reached over 65,000 students. The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) granted UE autonomous status and recognized 2 of its programs as Center of Excellence and 1 program as Center of Development. Central Philippine University Library
The Central Philippine University Library (commonly referred to as CPU Library) is the library system of the Central Philippine University in Iloilo City, Philippines. Established in 1910, it is one of the largest academic and research libraries in the Philippines (largest library in Western Visayas) at present with more than 250,000 volumes or holdings it has, including special collections categorized into sections which include the 40,000+ United Nations Documents, American Studies Resource Center (American Corner), Meyer-Asian Collection, Food and Agriculture Organization and Elizabeth Knox Sacred Music Collection. The Miguel de Benavides Library, also known as the University of Santo Tomas Library, is the main academic library of the University of Santo Tomas. The library has been in continuous service and its collection antedates the existence of the university itself. History The initial collection of the University of Santo Tomas's (UST) library came from donations; specifically from the private collections of the institution's founder, Fr. Miguel de Benavides and other benefactors including Fr. Diego Soria and Hernando de Los Rios Coronel. Other members of the Dominican Order also donated books concerning priesthood. UST's academic library was founded on July 24, 1611.
