Hermann Loew
Friedrich Hermann Loew (19 July 1807 – 21 April 1879) was a German entomologist who specialised in the study of Diptera, an order of insects including flies, mosquitoes, gnats and midges. He described many world species and was the first specialist to work on the Diptera of the United States. Biography Early years Hermann Loew was born in Weissenfels, Saxony a short distance south of Halle (Germany). The Loew family, though not wealthy, was well-placed. Loew's father was a functionary for the Department of Justice of the Duchy of Saxony who later became a ''Geheimer Regierungsrath'' of Prussia. Between 1817 and 1829 Loew attended first the Convent school of Rossleben, then the University of Halle-Wittenberg, graduating in mathematics, philology and natural history. Teacher, tutor and husband Recognizing his abilities as a mathematician, the university, on his graduation, appointed him as a lecturer in the same subjects. In 1830 he went to Berlin and gave lessons in differen ...

Dolichopodidae
Dolichopodidae, the long-legged flies, are a large, cosmopolitan family of true flies with more than 7,000 described species in about 230 genera. The genus ''Dolichopus'' is the most speciose, with some 600 species. Dolichopodidae generally are small flies with large, prominent eyes and a metallic cast to their appearance, though there is considerable variation among the species. Most have long legs, though some do not. In many species, the males have unusually large genitalia which are taxonomically useful in identifying species. Most adults are predatory on other small animals, though some may scavenge or act as kleptoparasites of spiders or other predators. An expanded concept of the family (Dolichopodidae ''sensu lato'') includes the subfamilies Parathalassiinae and Microphorinae. The latter of these was formerly placed in the Empididae, and was at one time considered a separate family (Microphoridae). However, some authors propose instead that Dolichopodidae ''s.l.'' shou ...

Liancalus
''Liancalus'' is a genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae. It contains at least 21 species distributed worldwide except in Australasia and Oceania. The genus includes some of the largest species in the family, with body length approaching 12 mm in some species. Nomenclature ''Liancalus'' Loew, 1857 is a replacement name for ''Anoplomerus'' Rondani, 1856, which was preoccupied by a beetle genus. However, the name ''Liancalus'' is threatened by a change in type species of ''Anoplomerus'' from "''Hydrophorus Regius'' Fabr." (now '' Liancalus virens'' ( Scopoli, 1763)) to "''Hydrophorus Notatus'' Meig." (now '' Scellus notatus'' (Fabricius, 1781)), made in an overlooked unpaginated corrigendum on the last page of Rondani, 1856, which would make ''Liancalus'' a synonym of '' Scellus''. An application to the ICZN was made to conserve the names ''Liancalus'' and ''Scellus'' by designating ''Dolichopus regius'' Fabricius, 1805 as the type species of ''Anoplomerus''. This was ...
