Gao Lian (dramatist)
Gao Lian (, fl. 16th century), was Chinese writer, dramatist and encyclopedist.Cihai: Page 2045. Gao Lian was born in Qiantang (钱塘 - present day Hangzhou). His courtesy name was Shenfu (深甫) and his Art name, pseudonym was Ruinan Daoren (瑞南道人). He is known to have written the plays ''Jiexiaoji'' (节孝记) and ''Yuzanji'' (玉簪记, "The Jade Hairpin"). Of the two, he is most noted for latter, a romantic drama about a young impoverished scholar and a Daoist nun. The piece remains a classic of the Ming Dynasty, Ming period theater in thirty-three scenes, some of which are still performed today. In his discussion of mental illness (''hsin-ping''), successfully diagnosed the condition now known as bipolar disorder. Gao advised his readers to avoid abortion and show concern for the elderly and physically weak. Hu Lien
Hu Lien (; 1907–1977) was a Kuomintang, Chinese Nationalist general who participated in the Northern Expedition, anti-communist Encirclement Campaigns, Second Sino-Japanese War and Chinese Civil War. Whampoa Military Academy He graduated alongside Lin Biao, one of the best Communist commanders. Many future commanders also graduated from the academy, including Du Yuming, Fan Hanjie and Sun Yuanliang. Second Sino-Japanese War Hu was a regiment commander in the 11th division in the Battle of Shanghai. He was wounded several times (including a shot through the jaw) and was promoted to division commander after the battle was over. Ju Lian (; 1828–1904), a native of Panyu (番禺, now Guangzhou, was a Chinese painter in Qing Dynasty. Lian James Wharton (born 21 February 1977) is a former English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 2000 and 2003. He was a left-handed batsman and a left-arm slow bowler. Song Lian (; 1310–1381), courtesy name Jinglian (), was a Chinese historian and politician of the Ming dynasty. He was a literary and political advisor to the Hongwu Emperor. Before that, he was one of the principal figures in the Yuan dynasty's Jinhua school of Neo-Confucianism. Su Lian Tan (born 1964) is a Malaysian-born American composer and flautist. Her works have been commissioned by the Takács Quartet, Meridian Arts Ensemble and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. She is currently a professor of music at Middlebury College in Vermont teaching Composition and Music Theory classes. Born in Malaysia, Tan began a professional career in music at the age of 14. Dato' Tan Lian Hoe (; born 14 November 1958) is a Malaysian politician. She was a Member of Parliament of Malaysia from 2004 to 2013. Yang Lian ( zh, 楊煉 Yáng Liàn; born 22 February 1955) is a Swiss-Chinese poet associated with the Misty Poets and also with the Searching for Roots school. He was born in Bern, Switzerland, in 1955 and raised in Beijing, where he attended primary school. His education was interrupted by the outbreak of the Cultural Revolution after 1966. In 1974 he was sent to Changping county near Beijing to undergo 're-education through labor', where he undertook a variety of tasks including digging graves.
