Liam Twomey (triathlete)
Liam Twomey (born 24 January 1994) is an Australian para-triathlete. He competed at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. Personal life He was born on 24 January 1994. At the age of seven, he was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer and forced to have his right leg amputated below his knee. This led to depression and drug taking in his late teens. He graduated from Caulfield Grammar School in 2011. In 2024, he is undertaking a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science at Deakin University. He works as an ambassador for the Black Dog Institute through a joint community engagement program with the Australian Institute of Sport called the Mental Fitness Program. In 2024, he was appointed Chair AusTriathlon's Athletes’ Commission. Para triathlon is a variant of the triathlon for athletes with a physical disability. The sport is governed by World Triathlon (TRI) (formerly known as ITU), and was first held as a Paralympic event at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Paratriathlon classification is the classification system for athletes participating in paratriathlon. It is governed by the World Triathlon (formerly known as ITU) The sport has been included in the 2016 Summer Paralympics. Classification system from 2017 World Triathlon has implemented some modifications to the classification system that was introduced in 2014 after further research was conducted to address certain aspects of the previous system.
