Leyli And Majnun (Fuzuli)
''Leyli and Majnun'' ( az, Leyli və Məcnun, ) is an epic poem written in Azerbaijani by the 16th-century poet Fuzuli. The poem, written in the form of a ''mathnawi'' (rhyming couplets), tells the story of a young man named Qays who falls in love with a girl named Leyli and earns the nickname "Majnun" () because of his love for her. The poem, considered the pinnacle of Fuzuli's creation, consists of 3096 bayts and was dedicated to Üveys Pasha, the Ottoman ruler of Baghdad. In 1908, Uzeyir Hajibeyov composed the first opera in the Islamic world based on this work of Fuzuli. Analysis of the poem Fuzuli created this poem, closely related to the Azerbaijani oral-poetic creation, continuing and updating the traditions of his predecessors. The poem is based on an ancient Arab legend. Fuzuli (poet)
Muhammad bin Suleyman ( az, Məhəmməd Süleyman oğlu, ; 1483–1556), better known by his pen name Fuzuli (, ), was a 16th-century poet who composed works in his native Azerbaijani language, Azerbaijani, as well as Persian language, Persian and Arabic language, Arabic. He is regarded as one of the greatest poets of Turkic languages, Turkic literature and a prominent figure in both Azerbaijani literature, Azerbaijani and Ottoman literature. Fuzuli's work was widely known and admired throughout the Persianate Turkic cultural domain from the 16th to the 19th century, with his fame reaching as far as Central Asia and Indian subcontinent, India. Born in 1483 in modern-day Iraq, Fuzuli studied literature, mathematics, astronomy and languages as a child. During his lifetime, his homeland changed hands between the Aq Qoyunlu, Safavid Iran, Safavid, and Ottoman Empire, Ottoman empires.
