Lewisham (UK Parliament Constituency)
Lewisham was a borough constituency in the Lewisham district of London. It returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, elected by the first past the post system. History The constituency was created by the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 for the 1885 general election, and abolished for the 1918 general election. It was replaced by the new Lewisham East and Lewisham West constituencies. During its existence Lewisham was a safe Conservative seat. John Penn (MP)
John Penn (30 March 1848 – 21 November 1903) was a British Conservative Party politician who served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Lewisham from 1891 to 1903. John Penn was the eldest son of the marine engineer John Penn. He was educated at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge. Benjamin Whitworth
Benjamin Whitworth (24 May 1816 – 24 September 1893) was an Irish politician, who represented constituencies in Ireland at the United Kingdom Parliament in Westminster, London. Early life Benjamin Whitworth was born in Manchester in 1816. He came to Drogheda as a child; his father was a corn merchant. Benjamin was educated in England, and he later went into business himself in Manchester. However he returned to Drogheda, and founded the Greenmount and Boyne Mills in 1865. This factory once employed 1,200 people and exported linen throughout the world. Parliamentary career He was returned for Drogheda, as a Liberal, in the 1865 general election. Major Sir Edward Coates, 1st Baronet, DL (25 February 1853 – 14 August 1921), was a British stockbroker and politician. Early life Sir Edward Coates was born in 1853. His father, John Coates, was a magistrate. He was educated at Marlborough College. Career Coates was a member of the city stockbroking firm of Coates and Son.Obituary, ''The Times'', 15 August 1921. In 1903 he was elected Conservative Party Member of Parliament (MP) for Lewisham. When that constituency was abolished in 1918 he won the new seat of Lewisham West which he held until his death. The 1903 Lewisham by-election was a by-election held on 15 December 1903 for the British House of Commons constituency of Lewisham. The by-election was triggered by the death of the serving Conservative Party Member of Parliament (MP), John Penn. The Unionist candidate was Major Edward Coates. The Liberal Party candidate was James William Cleland. As with the Dulwich by-election held on the same day, the main issue was tariff reform and Joseph Chamberlain's proposals for Imperial Preference. A factor which made the result of the by election difficult to predict was that the seat had not been contested since 1892 and in that time the population had doubled in size. The 1891 Lewisham by-election was a by-election held on 26 August 1891 for the British House of Commons constituency of Lewisham. The by-election was triggered by the elevation to the peerage of the serving Conservative Party Member of Parliament (MP), Viscount Lewisham on the death of his father. Candidates The Unionist candidate was John Penn. The Liberal Party candidate was George Septimus Warmington. Penn, who was treasurer of thRoyal Kent Dispensary and president of the Lee, Lewisham and Blackheath Horticultural Society, was head of his family's marine engineering firm in nearby Greenwich and as such was a major local employer.
