Lewis Stein
Lewis Stein (1945 – April 22, 2022) was an American visual artist living in New York City. Early life and education Stein was born in New York City in 1945. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, between 1964 and 1966, and the University of California at Berkeley between 1966 and 1968. He studied architecture at MIT and sculpture at the University of California at Berkeley. Work Stein's earliest work consisted of large acrylic or alkyd on gessoed canvas paintings in the minimalist mode which he had described as “anti-paintings.” As he explained to ''Mousse'' Magazine in 2017, “I was using painting to deconstruct painting. I wasn’t thinking of making fun of painting, but they’re funny paintings.” The artist was represented in the Whitney Annual (precursor to the Whitney Biennial) in 1969 at age 24. Postmasters Gallery
Postmasters is a contemporary art gallery located in Manhattan's Tribeca neighborhood, owned and directed by Magda Sawon and Tamas Banovich. The Postmasters gallery opened in the East Village in December 1984, moved to SoHo in 1989, and was relocated to Chelsea in September 1998. In June 2013 Postmasters was moved to 54 Franklin Street in Tribeca, taking over a ground-floor space complete with a large functional basement. The gallery has a history of exhibiting work in media that is challenging for a commercial art gallery, including the work of several Net.artists and political activists. For example, Maciej Wisniewski's media-rich e-mail software Netomat was exhibited as an artwork at the gallery in 1999 before being exhibited at the Whitney Museum of Art in 2000. SoHo Weekly News
The ''SoHo Weekly News'' (also called the ''SoHo News'') was a weekly alternative newspaper published in New York City from 1973 to 1982. The paper was founded in 1973 by Michael Goldstein (1938–2018). History The first issue was published on October 11, 1973. Initially published in eight pages, it eventually grew to over 100 pages and competed with ''The Village Voice''. The paper's offices were at 111 Spring Street, Manhattan, although the earliest issues showed the address of Goldstein's apartment on the masthead. Circulation was reported as 25,000 – 30,000. The paper was sold to Associated Newspaper Group (ANG) in 1979. In the fall of 1981, ANG announced plans to close or sell the paper by February 1982. Although there were negotiations with possible purchasers, which continued beyond the original deadline, continuing losses ($1.7 million in the previous year) forced ANG to shut down the paper in March. Robert Morris (artist)
Robert Morris (February 9, 1931 – November 28, 2018) was an American sculptor, conceptual artist and writer.
