Lewandowski (; feminine Lewandowska, plural Lewandowscy) is a Polish-language surname. In other languages it may be transliterated as Lewandowsky, Levandovski, Levandovsky, Levandovskyy, Levandoski, Levandovskiy. It is the seventh most common surname in Poland (93,404 people in 2009). It is derived from the place name ''Lewandów'', itself derived from the Old Polish word ''lewanda'' – 'lavender' (''lawenda'' in modern Polish). It is most frequent in mid-northern Poland, making up as much as 1.1% of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship's population (the record of Poland). Personal life Lewandowsky studied medicine at the Universities of Marburg, Berlin and Halle, earning his medical doctorate at Halle in 1898. In 1902 he obtained his post-graduate qualification for physiology, and in 1904, received training in clinical neurology and psychiatry under Karl Bonhoeffer and Franz Nissl at the University of Heidelberg. Afterwards he travelled to Paris, where he studied under neurologist Pierre Marie. Felix Lewandowsky (1 October 1879, Hamburg – 31 October 1921, Basel) was a German dermatologist. Biography In 1902, he earned his doctorate at the University of Strassburg. From 1903 to 1907, he worked at the dermatological clinic in Bern, where he served as an assistant to Josef Jadassohn (1863–1936). Afterwards, he returned to his hometown of Hamburg, where he worked in dermatologist Eduard Arning’s department at St. Georg's Hospital. In 1917, he was appointed director of the dermatological clinic at Basel. While at Basel, he was the author of works on leprosy. Lewandowsky specialized in the study of tuberculosis and pediatric skin diseases, and published an important work in 1916 on tuberculosis of the skin titled ''Die Tuberkulose der Haut''. With Jadassohn, he described an ectodermal dysplasia now known as Jadassohn–Lewandowsky syndrome. Brothers Lewandowski (Hermann, Adolf, Max and David), sons of Jakob Lewandowski with the headquarter in Berlin produced in 1871 fabrics with own production facilities and more than 56 shops. Sascha Lewandowski (5 October 1971 – 8 June 2016) was a German football manager. Managerial career Lewandowski was head coach of VfL Bochum II between 1 July 2006 to 31 December 2006. Michał Lewandowski (born 2 August 1996) is a Polish professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for IV liga club Sokół Kolbuszowa Dolna.
