Levuka F.C.
Levuka F.C. was a Fijian football team playing in the Fiji Senior League, second division of the Fiji Football Association competitions. It is based in Levuka, which is the only town on Ovalau (Fiji), Ovalau Island, in the Fiji group. Their home stadium is Nasau Park. Their uniform includes blue and white striped shirt. History Since Levuka was the first permanent European settlement in Fiji, football was undoubtedly first played in Levuka. Fijians, Fijian teams started playing competitive football in 1904 when the first Fijian Inter-District Tournament was played at Nasau Park, Levuka, during celebrations marking the golden jubilee of Cession. Teams played for the Ricarnie Cup which was won by the Sawani team from Naitasiri Province, Naitasiri. The following year, Bau FC won the cup. Fiji Senior League
The Fiji Senior League, or the Digicel Senior League for sponsorship reasons, is the second-highest division within the Fiji football league system after the Fiji Premier League. It is contested by twelve teams with two groups of six teams and is run and overseen by the Fiji Football Association in Fiji. The champions of the Fiji Senior League are promoted to the Premier League with the other promotion coming from the play-offs. The league starts in February / March. The senior league is popular to "blood" the Fiji youth players to prepare them for professional football. Levuka
Levuka () is a Local government in Fiji, town on the eastern coast of the Fijian island of Ovalau (Fiji), Ovalau, in Lomaiviti Province, in the Eastern Division, Fiji, Eastern Division of Fiji. Prior to 1877, it was the capital of Fiji. At the census in 2007, the last to date, Levuka town had a population of 1,131 (plus 3,266 living in the peri-urban area as defined by the Bureau of Statistics), about half of Ovalau's 8,360 inhabitants. It is the economic hub and the largest of 24 settlements on the island. Ovalau (Fiji)
Ovalau (pronounced ) is the sixth largest island in Fiji. It is located in Lomaiviti Archipelago. Situated at 17.70° South and 178.8° East, (60 km north east from the national capital Suva and 20 km off the east coast of Viti Levu), the island is about 13 kilometers long and 10 kilometers wide. It covers a total area of 106.4 square kilometers and has a population of around 9,100, approximately half the Lomaiviti population. Levuka, Fiji's former capital, is the largest of 24 towns and villages on the island. Ovalau is characterized by its rugged topography, with little flat land apart from the Lovoni Valley in the centre of the island. Fijians ( fj, iTaukei, lit=Owners (of the land)) are a nation and ethnic group native to Fiji, who speak Fijian and share a common history and culture. Fijians, or ''iTaukei'', are the major indigenous people of the Fiji Islands, and live in an area informally called Melanesia. Inter-District Championship
The Inter-District Championship (IDC) is the amateur Fijian football cup. Only five teams ( Suva, Rewa, Ba, Levuka and Lautoka) first took part in the first IDC held in Suva in 1938. From 1938 to 1975, the competition was initially held on a knock out format but in 1976 pool play was introduced. From 1985, the competition was held in two divisions with the introduction of a second level tournament known as the Premier Division. In 1999 there was a short lived third level division. With Navua registering its first ever win of the IDC tournament in 2009, all the current (as of January 2010) Super Premium Division teams have now won the Lloyd Farebrother Trophy one or more time(s). The Fiji Football Association is the governing body of football in Fiji. It came into existence in 1961. It is the overseeing body of the Fiji National Team and its leagues. History Football started to be played in Fiji ever since the arrival of Europeans in Fiji and establishment of towns like Levuka where significant numbers of sports enthusiasts could congregate and socialise with a friendly game. Missionaries, who established schools in Fiji, introduced football as part of the school program and football was being played in schools as early as 1889. The Suva Soccer Football Club was formed in 1905, made up of European employees of the Government and businesses and similar clubs existed in Nausori and Levuka.
