Utopian and dystopian fiction are genres of speculative fiction that explore social and political structures. Utopian fiction portrays a setting that agrees with the author's ethos, having various attributes of another reality intended to appeal to readers. Dystopian fiction offers the opposite: the portrayal of a setting that completely disagrees with the author's ethos. Some novels combine both genres, often as a metaphor for the different directions humility can take depending on its choices, ending up with one of two possible futures. More than 400 utopian works in the English language were published prior to the year 1900, with more than a thousand others appearing during the 20th century. This increase is partially associated with the rise in popularity of genre fiction, science fiction and young adult fiction more generally, but also larger scale social change that broug ...

Bande Dessinée
(singular ; literally 'drawn strips'), abbreviated BDs and also referred to as Franco-Belgian comics (), are comics that are usually originally in French and created for readership in France and Belgium. These countries have a long tradition in comics, separate from that of English-language comics. Belgium is a mostly bilingual country, and comics originally in Dutch (, literally "strip stories", or simply "strips") are culturally a part of the world of ''bandes dessinées''; these are translated to French and concurrently sold to the French-reading audience and vice versa. Among the most popular ''bandes dessinées'' are ''The Adventures of Tintin'' (by Hergé), ''Gaston Lagaffe'' ( Franquin), ''Asterix'' ( Goscinny & Uderzo), ''Lucky Luke'' (Morris & Goscinny), ''The Smurfs'' (Peyo) and ''Spike and Suzy'' (Willy Vandersteen). Some highly-regarded realistically drawn and plotted ''bandes dessinées'' include ''Blueberry'' ( Charlier & Giraud, aka "Moebius"), ''Thorgal'' ...

Horizontal And Vertical Writing In East Asian Scripts
Many East Asian scripts can be written horizontally or vertically. Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese Hán- Nôm and Korean scripts can be oriented along either axis, as they consist mainly of disconnected logographic or syllabic units, each occupying a square block of space, thus allowing for flexibility for which direction texts can be written, be it horizontally from left-to-right, horizontally from right-to-left, vertically from top-to-bottom, and even vertically from bottom-to-top. Traditionally, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Korean are written vertically in columns going from top to bottom and ordered from right to left, with each new column starting to the left of the preceding one. The stroke order and stroke direction of Chinese characters (''hanzi'' in Chinese, ''kanji'' in Japanese, chữ Hán in Vietnamese and ''hanja'' in Korean), Japanese kana, Vietnamese chữ Nôm and Korean Hangul all facilitate writing in this manner. In addition, writing in vertical columns ...
