Leven (ward)
Leven is one of the six wards used to elect members of the West Dunbartonshire Council. It elects four Councillors. The ward covers the southern parts of the Vale of Leven including Alexandria, Bonhill, Dalmonach and Renton, plus northern parts of Dumbarton: streets north/west of Townend Road including the modern Lomondgate development and Broadmeadow Industrial Estate, and the entire Bellsmyre area. Wards And Electoral Divisions Of The United Kingdom
The wards and electoral divisions in the United Kingdom are electoral districts at sub-national level, represented by one or more councillors. The ward is the primary unit of English electoral geography for civil parishes and borough and district councils, the electoral ward is the unit used by Welsh principal councils, while the electoral division is the unit used by English county councils and some unitary authorities. Scottish Socialist Party
The Scottish Socialist Party (SSP; gd, Pàrtaidh Sòisealach na h-Alba; sco, Scots Socialist Pairtie) is a left-wing political party campaigning for the establishment of an independent socialist Scotland. The party was founded in 1998. It campaigns for Scottish independence, against cuts to public services and welfare and for democratic public ownership of the economy. The SSP was one of three parties in Yes Scotland, the official cross-party campaign for Scottish independence in the 2014 referendum, with national co-spokesperson Colin Fox sitting on its advisory board. 2022 West Dunbartonshire Council Election
The 2022 West Dunbartonshire Council election was held on Thursday 5 May 2022, on the same day as the 31 other local authorities in Scotland. The election used the six wards created under the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, with 22 councillors being elected. Each ward elected either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system. Alba Party
The Alba Party is a Scottish nationalist and pro-independence political party in Scotland. The party was founded in February 2021, with Alex Salmond (a former first minister of Scotland) announced as party leader shortly thereafter. Salmond launched the party's 2021 Scottish Parliament election campaign in March 2021, with the party standing list-only candidates. Two Members of Parliament (MPs) in the House of Commons defected from the Scottish National Party (SNP) to the Alba Party on 27 March 2021, and several former SNP MPs also joined the party. 2017 West Dunbartonshire Council Election
The 2017 West Dunbartonshire Council election was held on Thursday 4 May 2017, on the same day as the 31 other local authorities in Scotland. The election used the six wards created under the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, with 22 Councillors being elected. Each ward will elect either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system. Following the 2012 election a Labour majority administration was formed. After this election, the SNP group and Councillor Denis Agnew formed a minority coalition administration, led by the SNP leader, Jonathan McColl. As part of the deal, the title of bailie was revived, and Councillor Agnew was appointed as West Dunbartonshire's first. 2012 West Dunbartonshire Council Election
Elections to West Dunbartonshire Council were held on 3 May 2012 on the same day as the 31 other local authorities in Scotland. The election used the six wards created under the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, with 22 Councillors being elected. Each ward elected either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system. The election saw the Scottish Labour Party gain 2 seats to secure an overall majority on the Council while also significantly increasing their vote. The Scottish National Party remained in second place on the Council but West Dunbartonshire proved to be their worst performance in Scotland as they lost 3 seats including that of their former Council leader, Ronnie McColl. Independents increased their seat numbers to 3 through the addition of former Labour Councillor and the Scottish Socialist Party retained their sole seat in Scotland. Scottish Labour Party
Scottish Labour ( gd, Pàrtaidh Làbarach na h-Alba, sco, Scots Labour Pairty; officially the Scottish Labour Party) is a social democratic political party in Scotland. It is an autonomous section of the UK Labour Party. The West Dunbartonshire Community Party is a minor political party involved in local government elections in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. The party was formed in 2015 to contest the 2017 West Dunbartonshire Council election. History In 2015, the party was founded by Drew MacEoghainn along with other community activists. It was decided that the party should have no leader giving an equal say to all members. Jim Bollan
Jim Bollan (born c. 1950) is a councillor in West Dunbartonshire, representing the West Dunbartonshire Community Party. Until 2016 he was a member of the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP), having been the only elected representative from that party left in Scotland. Political career Bollan, at one time a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain, was elected as a Labour councillor for Renton and Alexandria South ward in 1988, later becoming the party group leader on Dumbarton District Council. He was elected as an Independent representative on West Dunbartonshire Council in the 1999 local elections, defeating Labour and Scottish National Party (SNP) opponents. He went on to join the SSP and was re-elected in 2003, defeating an SNP opponent. West Dunbartonshire ( sco, Wast Dunbairtonshire; gd, Siorrachd Dhùn Breatann an Iar, ) is one of the 32 local government council areas of Scotland. The area lies to the west of the City of Glasgow and contains many of Glasgow's commuter towns and villages. West Dunbartonshire also borders Argyll and Bute, East Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire and Stirling. The area was formed on 1 April 1996 from part of the former Strathclyde Region, namely the entire district of Clydebank, and the Dumbarton district less the Helensburgh area.
