Hebrew (; ; ) is a Northwest Semitic language of the Afroasiatic language family. Historically, it is one of the spoken languages of the Israelites and their longest-surviving descendants, the Jews and Samaritans. It was largely preserved throughout history as the main liturgical language of Judaism (since the Second Temple period) and Samaritanism. Chaim Levanon
Chaim Levanon (1899–1986; he, חיים לבנון) was a Polish-born Israeli politician and mayor of Tel Aviv between 13 April 1953 and 1959. Personal life Levanon was born in Kraków, Poland, in 1899 as Chaim Yosef Levinstein. After graduating from a yeshiva, he studied agricultural engineering at the Jagiellonian University. He made aliyah in 1927 and taught at the Ehad HaAm gymnasium in Petah Tikva. In 1928 he married Miriam Levit Shamrot. Political activity Levanon was one of the founders of the General Zionists youth movement, and later one of its leaders. He also founded and headed the Civilian Housing organization. In 1936 he served as the chairman of the election committee in Tel Aviv and the secretary-general of the General Zionists' labor union. In 1951 he was elected to Tel Aviv's city council and served as the deputy mayor from 1952. Nehemiah Levanon
Nehemiah Levanon ( he, נחמיה לבנון; March 23, 1915 – September 2, 2003) was an Israeli intelligence agent, diplomat, head of the aliyah program Nativ, and a founder of kibbutz Kfar Blum. Originally a native of Latvia, he immigrated to the Mandatory Palestine in 1938. After Israel's independence in 1948, Levanon served in a variety of roles to encourage the well-being and emigration of Soviet Jewry. Due to the covert nature of his work, Levanon's decades of service were largely unknown until after his retirement, during the last days of the Soviet Union. Early life Niuma Levitan was born in 1915 in Rujiena, Latvia, to Yosef and Bertha Ilion Levitan. Yaacov Levanon
Yaacov Levanon (originally Yaacov Bilansky) (1895–1965) was an Israeli Jewish musician and composer in the British Mandate of Palestine and later Israel. Levanon was born in Korets, Ukraine, the son of a haskalah scholar from Novohrad-Volynskyy ( Samuel Bilansky). He was trained at the conservatory in Mykolaiv, Ukraine. After serving in the Red Army he emigrated in 1919 to Palestine, where he established himself as a composer and music teacher. His opus includes music for operettas, films (including the first Hebrew-language talking film, ''This is the Land'' 'zot hi ha'aretz'' 1935), instrumental pieces, and children's songs. Yaacov Levanon, who taught in Arab schools in Jerusalem, was commissioned by the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Amin al-Husayni, to establish a children's orchestra to entertain, among other things, for the holiday Eid ul-Fitr.
