Letterio Calapai
Letterio "Leo" Calapai (March 29, 1901–March 29, 1993) was an American artist and educator, who identified with the Realism movement. Calapai completed works of art for the Federal Arts Project, which was organized by the Works Progress Administration in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Early years A native of Boston and born to Sicilian immigrants, Calapai graduated from East Boston High School in 1923, where an interest in art grew. He then received a degree in painting from the Massachusetts Normal Art School in 1925, and is known to have later worked under Charles Hopkinson, who later financially supported his work. In 1928, Calapai moved to New York City to pursue a career in lithography, and continued to take courses at the American Artists School, the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, and The Art Students League of New York. Emma Amos (painter)
Emma Amos (16 March 1937 – 20 May 2020) was a Postmodernist art, postmodern African Americans, African-American Painting, painter and printmaker. Early life Amos was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1937 to India DeLaine Amos and Miles Green Amos. She also has an older brother named Larry. Amos took an interest in art at an early age, creating "masses of paper dolls" and learning figure drawing from issues of Esquire (magazine), Esquire and the art of Alberto Vargas, was painting the figure by the age of nine. Her mother had aspirations of Amos studying with Hale Woodruff, but he did not accept many private students and left the area before she had the opportunity to study with him. Atelier 17
Atelier 17 was an art school and studio that was influential in the teaching and promotion of printmaking in the 20th century. Originally located in Paris, the studio relocated to New York during the years surrounding World War II. It moved back to Paris in 1950. History The Atelier 17 studio was formed as an experimental workshop for the graphic arts in Paris, France in 1927 by Stanley William Hayter (1901–1988). The studio was known for its collaborative atmosphere, with artists sharing ideas on technique and aesthetics. The studio was located at 17 rue Campagne-Première in Paris. Federal Art Project
The Federal Art Project (1935–1943) was a New Deal program to fund the visual arts in the United States. Under national director Holger Cahill, it was one of five Federal Project Number One projects sponsored by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), and the largest of the New Deal art projects. It was created not as a cultural activity, but as a relief measure to employ artists and artisans to create murals, easel paintings, sculpture, graphic art, posters, photography, theatre scenic design, and arts and crafts. Thomas Wolfe
Thomas Clayton Wolfe (October 3, 1900 – September 15, 1938) was an American novelist of the early 20th century. Wolfe wrote four lengthy novels as well as many short stories, dramatic works, and novellas. William Carlos Williams
William Carlos Williams (September 17, 1883 – March 4, 1963) was an American poet, writer, and physician closely associated with modernism and imagism. In addition to his writing, Williams had a long career as a physician practicing both pediatrics and general medicine. He was affiliated with Passaic General Hospital, where he served as the hospital's chief of pediatrics from 1924 until his death. The hospital, which is now known as St. Mary's General Hospital, paid tribute to Williams with a memorial plaque that states "We walk the wards that Williams walked". Printmaking is the process of creating artworks by printing, normally on paper, but also on fabric, wood, metal, and other surfaces. The Art Students League of New York is an art school at 215 West 57th Street in Manhattan, New York City, New York. American Artists School
The American Artists School was a progressive independent art school in New York City associated with socialism and the American Radical movement. The school was founded in April 1936 at 131 West 14th Street, upon the dissolution of the John Reed Club School of Art. Its founders and board of directors included members and former members of the John Reed Club such as William Gropper, as well as contributors to the ''New Masses'' and the ''Daily Worker'', and notable artists such as Margaret Bourke-White and Louis Schanker. Harry Gottlieb was its first director and Henry Billings the first secretary. The school emphasized art that was not only technically excellent but also alive to the social and class realities of the day, and stressed socially relevant content.
