Letter Of Introduction
''Letter of Introduction'' is a 1938 American comedy-drama film directed by John M. Stahl. In 1966, the film entered the public domain in the United States because the claimants did not renew its copyright registration in the 28th year after publication. Plot An aging actor, John Mannering, is surprised when his estranged daughter, Kay Martin, shows up. She is an actress trying to succeed on Broadway. He is persuaded to perform on Broadway for the first time in twelve years in a play with her. He is anxious about his performance, so turns to alcohol to overcome his self-doubt. He tries to re-establish his relationship with his daughter while trying to hide from the press that she is his daughter. Ernest Cossart (born Emil Gottfried von Holst, 24 September 1876 – 21 January 1951) was an English-American actor. After a stage career in England, he moved to the US, appearing on Broadway and all around the country. In the 1930s and 1940s, he appeared in films, specializing in playing butlers, valets, and similar roles, but playing a range of other parts. Edgar John Bergen (born Edgar John Berggren; February 16, 1903 – September 30, 1978) was an American ventriloquist, actor, comedian, vaudevillian and radio performer, best known for his proficiency in ventriloquism and his characters Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. He was the father of actress Candice Bergen. Early life Bergen was born in Chicago, Illinois, one of five children and the younger of two sons of Swedish immigrants Nilla Svensdotter (née Osberg) and Johan Henriksson Berggren. Charlie McCarthy (ventriloquist)
Charlie McCarthy is Edgar Bergen's famed ventriloquist dummy partner. Charlie was part of Bergen's act as early as high school, and by 1930, was attired in his famous top hat, tuxedo, and monocle. The character was so well-known that his popularity exceeded that of his performer, Bergen. Charlie's personality was that of a mischievous little boy (with an Irish lilt), who could wisecrack, misbehave, and flirt shamelessly in a way that Bergen couldn't (in much the same way that the Muppet characters could behave more outrageously than any of their human co-stars). Bergen's original McCarthy dummy was built by noted carpenter/dummy-maker Theodore Mack, and was later rebuilt by Frank Marshall.
