Letneozersky (air Base)
Letneozersky (also Letneozerskiy, Obozersky Southeast (US)) is an former interceptor air base located 8 km (5 miles) southeast of Obozersky, Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia. It was home to the 524th Interceptor Aviation Regiment (IAP) with up to 27 Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 (NATO: Foxbat) interceptor aircraft based at the airfield during the 1980s. It features two major revetment areas holding over 15 aircraft each. The base provides air defense cover for the airspace around Arkhangelsk and Plesetsk Cosmodrome, and it was subordinate to the Arkhangelsk Air Defense District. Obozersky
Obozersky (russian: Обозерский) is an urban locality (an urban-type settlement) in Plesetsky District of Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia, located on the upper Vaymuga River, a tributary of the Yemtsa River in the Northern Dvina basin. Obozersky lies south of Arkhangelsk (by rail). The name of the settlement originates from Lake Obozero, located south of Obozersky. Military airfield Letneozyorsk is located southeast of the settlement. Municipally, Obozersky is the administrative center of Obozerskoye Urban Settlement, one of the eight urban settlements in the district. Population: . The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 (russian: Микоян и Гуревич МиГ-25; NATO reporting name: Foxbat) is a supersonic interceptor and reconnaissance aircraft that is among the fastest military aircraft to enter service. Designed by the Soviet Union's Mikoyan-Gurevich bureau, it is an aircraft built primarily using stainless steel. It was to be the last plane designed by Mikhail Gurevich, before his retirement. Plesetsk Cosmodrome
Plesetsk Cosmodrome ( rus, Космодром «Плесецк», r=Kosmodrom "Plesetsk", p=kəsmɐˈdrom plʲɪˈsʲet͡sk) is a Russian spaceport located in Mirny, Arkhangelsk Oblast, about 800 km north of Moscow and approximately 200 km south of Arkhangelsk, the cosmodrome dates to 1957. Originally developed as an ICBM site for the R-7 missile, it also served for numerous satellite launches using the R-7 and other rockets. Its high latitude makes it useful only for certain types of launches, especially the Molniya orbits, so for much of the site's history it functioned as a secondary location, with most orbital launches taking place from Baikonur, in the Kazakh SSR.
