Lester Simpson
Lester Simpson is an English folk singer and radio presenter on BBC Local Radio in BBC Radio Derby, Derbyshire, BBC Radio Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and BBC Radio Leicester, Leicestershire. He features in the three-piece folk group Coope, Boyes and Simpson, and on the ''Folkwaves'' radio program with Mick Peat. The Belper Folk Club was a favourite with Lester in the early to mid 1970s. As a "floor singer" at this venue, he learned skills which he later developed with his fellows in Coope, Boyes and Simpson. BBC Local Radio (also referred to as Local BBC Radio) is the BBC's local and regional radio division for England and the Channel Islands, consisting of forty stations. History The popularity of pirate radio was to challenge a change within the at the time very "stiff" and blinkered management at the BBC. The most prominent concession by the BBC was the creation of BBC Radio 1, to satisfy the ever-demanding new youth culture with their thirst for new, popular music. The other, however, was the fact that these pirate radio stations were, in some cases, local. As a result, BBC Local Radio began as an experiment. Coope, Boyes And Simpson
Coope Boyes and Simpson was an English vocal folk trio, formed around 1990. Their sound was rich and often had unusual vocal harmonies. The group comprised singers Barry Coope, Jim Boyes (formerly of Swan Arcade) and Lester Simpson, and almost all of their music was sung entirely a cappella, although they occasionally used accordion, guitar and drums very sparingly on recordings. They performed a mixture of both traditional folk songs (though often creatively arranged), hymns and carols, and their own original compositions. Most of their albums have been released on the No Masters label—the No Masters Co-operative is a recording and publishing company run by songwriters, singers and musicians based in the North of England.
