Leslie Thoms
Leslie Russell Thoms (March 7, 1938 - December 5, 1999) was a Canadian politician, who represented the electoral district of Grand Bank in the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 1979 to 1982. He was a member of the Liberal Party. Prior to his election to the legislature, Thoms had been a supporter of Bill Rowe's 1977 campaign for the Liberal leadership, although Rowe stepped aside in favour of Don Jamieson by the time of the 1979 Newfoundland general election. Thoms was elected to the legislature in that election. Due to the Liberal Party's loss, Jamieson stepped down as leader following the election and Thoms ran as a candidate in the resulting leadership convention, but ultimately lost to Len Stirling. Thoms was defeated in the 1982 Newfoundland and Labrador general election by Bill Matthews of the Progressive Conservatives. Newfoundland And Labrador New Democratic Party
The Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party (NL NDP) is a social democratic political party in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is a provincial section of the federal New Democratic Party. It was formed in 1961 as the successor to the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and the Newfoundland Democratic Party. The party first contested the 1962 provincial election. The party won its first seat in the House of Assembly in 1984 and has been represented in the legislature since 1990. Lorraine Michael was elected leader of the NL NDP at the party's leadership election on May 28, 2006. She led the party during the 2007 and 2011 general elections, each time improving the party's share of vote from the previous election. ''The Western Star'' is a weekly newspaper published Wednesdays in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, and also serving Stephenville and the Bay of Islands, Bay St. George and Humber Valley areas. The paper was founded in 1900 in Curling, as a weekly newspaper. It became a daily paper in 1954 and was the only daily newspaper in western Newfoundland. It also had readers outside its main coverage area in Labrador. On April 13, 2017, Transcontinental announced that it had sold all of its newspapers in Atlantic Canada to SaltWire Network, a newly formed parent company of ''The Chronicle Herald''. The Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador is a provincial political party in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The party was founded in 1949 and most recently formed the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador from the 2003 general election until the 2015 general election. The party has served as the official opposition to the government of Newfoundland and Labrador since 14 December 2015. On 31 March 2021, MHA David Brazil was appointed interim leader. Len Stirling
Len Stirling is a former politician in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. He was a member of the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 1979 to 1982 and was leader of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador from 1980 to 1982. Private life Stirling is from Corner Brook and has worked as an insurance executive in private life. He served as deputy mayor of St. John's before entering provincial politics. Party president and assembly member Stirling was president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Liberal Party in the late 1970s and played a pivotal role in persuading Donald Jamieson to lead the party in the 1979 provincial election.
