Leslie Morris (designer)
Leslie Morris was an American fashion designer who headed the couture department at Bergdorf Goodman between 1931 and 1967. She was born in New York. After attending a finishing school, Morris worked as a designer for Harry Collins before being employed in 1928 by Bergdorf Goodman department store to create couture-level clothing in their made-to-order salon. Unusually for a department store, Bergdorf actively promoted their in-house designers by name, despite Morris being notably publicity-shy. Her fellow designers at Bergdorf's included Russian royalty Grand Duchess Marie, and a Paris couturier called Valentine Tukine, before she was named head designer of the couture department in 1931. She also worked alongside Mark Mooring while he was at Bergdorf's between 1933 and 1948, and in 1941, Morris, Mooring and Mary Gleason were cited as the store's three best-known designers. Bergdorf Goodman
Bergdorf Goodman Inc. is a luxury department store based on Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, New York. The company was founded in 1899 by Herman Bergdorf and was later owned and managed by Edwin Goodman, and later his son, Andrew Goodman. Today, Bergdorf Goodman operates from two stores situated across the street from each other at Fifth Avenue between 57th Street and 58th Streets. The main store, which opened at its current location in 1928, is located on the west side of Fifth Avenue. A separate men's store, established in 1990, is located on the east side of Fifth Avenue, directly across the street. Finishing School
A finishing school focuses on teaching young women social graces and upper-class cultural rites as a preparation for entry into society. The name reflects that it follows on from ordinary school and is intended to complete the education, with classes primarily on deportment and etiquette, with academic subjects secondary. It may consist of an intensive course, or a one-year programme. In the United States it is sometimes called a charm school. Graeme Donald claims that the educational ladies' salons of the late 19th century led to the formal, finishing institutions evidenced in Switzerland around that time. Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia (russian: Великая Княгиня Мария Павловна; – 13 December 1958), known as ''Maria Pavlovna the Younger'', was a granddaughter of Alexander II of Russia. She was a paternal first cousin of Nicholas II (Russia's last Tsar) and paternal first cousin of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (consort of Elizabeth II). She was also both the first grandchild of George I of Greece and the first great-grandchild of his father, Christian IX of Denmark. Mark Mooring
Mark Mooring (1901–1971) was an American fashion and costume designer. He grew up in Texas and graduated from Parsons School of Design, New York, in 1923. After this, he designed costumes for Broadway theatre productions including '' Song of the Flames'' (1925) and ''Dearest Enemy'' (1926). Between 1933 and 1948, Mooring was a designer for the custom department of Bergdorf Goodman. While there he worked alongside Leslie Morris and Mary Gleason, and the three of them became known as a strong design team and the store's best known designers. For his work at Bergdorf's, Mooring was awarded a Coty Award in 1947 alongside Jacob H. Horwitz, Nettie Rosenstein and Adele Simpson. The Coty American Fashion Critics' Awards (awarded 1943–1984) were created in 1942 by the cosmetics and perfume company Coty, Inc. to promote and celebrate American fashion, and encourage design during the Second World War. In 1985, the Coty Awards were discontinued with the last presentation of the awards in September 1984; the CFDA Awards fulfill a similar role. Sydney Wragge
Sydney Wragge (1908–1978) was an American fashion designer active during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. Working as B.H. Wragge, he was particularly renowned for his American sportswear, with the historian Caroline Rennolds Milbank declaring him the leader in mix-and-match separates and interchangeable wardrobe design.
