Leslie Cripps
Leslie Cripps is a Canadian rugby union player and former captain of the national team. A national team representative for over a decade, Cripps is considered one of the top ten North American women rugby union players. Rugby career Cripp's rugby career started after graduating high school in the summer with the Williams Lake Rugby Club. She then played with the University of Victoria Valkaries (1996-1999), the Velox and the James Bay AA in Victoria, B.C. Cripps' first international appearance was on the Canadian U23 team in 2000 against the United States. A year later, Cripps also played against the Americans for her cap for the national seniors team. Cripps made 47 international appearances between 2001 and 2010. Rugby union, commonly known simply as rugby, is a close-contact team sport that originated at Rugby School in the first half of the 19th century. One of the two codes of rugby football, it is based on running with the ball in hand. The 2002 Women's Rugby World Cup was the second World Cup fully sanctioned by the sports governing body the International Rugby Board (IRB). The tournament was held in Barcelona, Spain. The formatThere are 16 teams at the IRB Women's World Cup 2002. They are divided into four Pools of four teams each, according to each team's seeding. For the first set of matches the highest seeded team plays the lowest seeded team whilst the two mid-seeded teams play each other. After the first round of matches the positions in each Pool are recalculated with the winners of the first matches in first and second places, and the losers in third and fourth places. In the second set of matches, the top two teams and the bottom two teams from each Pool play each other. The final Pool standings are calculated from the results of these matches to give the final four positions in each Pool. 2006 Women's Rugby World Cup
The 2006 Women's Rugby World Cup (officially IRB Rugby World Cup 2006 Canada) took place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The tournament began on 31 August and ended on 17 September 2006. The 2006 tournament was the third World Cup approved by the IRB, the previous two being held 2002 in Spain and in the Netherlands, in 1998. The Black Ferns of New Zealand won the 2006 World Cup, defeating England in the final, as they had in 2002. It was New Zealand's third successive title. The semi-finals were also direct repeats of the 2002 tournament – in fact five of the top six places in the final rankings were unchanged. Elsewhere the USA advanced from 7th in 2002 to 5th, and Ireland climbed from 14th to 8th while Australia (5th to 7th), Spain (8th to 9th), and Samoa (9th to 10th) slipped down. 2010 Women's Rugby World Cup
The 2010 Women's Rugby World Cup was the sixth edition of the Women's Rugby World Cup and was held in England. The International Rugby Board Executive Committee selected the host union following a recommendation from the Rugby World Cup Limited board after considering bids from the Rugby Football Union and the German Rugby Union – it had been England's third successive bid after being rejected in 2002 and 2006. The tournament was again being organised by the International Rugby Board (IRB) as opposed to the host union, and included five matches for all teams played on 20, 24, 28 August and 1 and 5 September. In May 2009 it was announced that the semi final, 3rd place play off and final would take place at The Stoop and not Twickenham as had previously been suggested.
