Les Sacqueboutiers, formerly Les Saqueboutiers de Toulouse, are French early music wind and brass ensemble founded in 1976 by Jean-Pierre Canihac and Jean-Pierre Mathieu at Toulouse. They play the cornet à bouquin and the sackbut, with other instruments supporting. Artistic direction is conducted by Jean-Pierre Canihac and Daniel Lassalle. Jean-Pierre Canihac
Jean-Pierre Canihac is a French performer of early music and a founding member of ''Sacqueboutiers''. Soloist of international ensembles, he has performed under the baton of Jordi Savall, Jean-Claude Malgoire, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, René Clemencic, Andrew Parrott, William Christie (musician), William Christie and Philippe Herreweghe. He has taught the cornett and natural trumpet in international academies of ancient music like Saintes, Genève, Barcelona and Daroca. In 1989, Canihac was named professor of Département de Musique Ancienne at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Lyon. From 2001 to 2011 he was professor of the early music department at the Catalonia College of Music (Esmuc), in Barcelona, and currently he teaches cornetto and natural trumpet at the Toulouse Conservatoire. Cornet à Bouquin
The cornett, cornetto, or zink is an early wind instrument that dates from the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods, popular from 1500 to 1650. It was used in what are now called alta capellas or wind ensembles. It is not to be confused with the modern cornet. The sound of the cornett is produced by lip vibrations against a cup mouthpiece, similar to modern brass instruments. A cornett consists of a conical wooden pipe covered in leather, is about long, and has finger holes and a small horn, ivory, or bone mouthpiece. The range is from A3 to A5, however the bottom note can be lipped as far as G3 and a good player can get up to E6. Construction The ordinary treble cornett is made by splitting a length of wood and gouging out the two halves to make the gently conical, curved bore. Sackbut
The term sackbut refers to the early forms of the trombone commonly used during the Renaissance music, Renaissance and Baroque music, Baroque eras. A sackbut has the characteristic telescopic slide of a trombone, used to vary the length of the tube to change Pitch (music), pitch, but is distinct from later trombones by its smaller, more cylindrically-proportioned bore (wind instruments), bore, and its less-flared bell (wind instrument), bell. Unlike the earlier slide trumpet from which it evolved, the sackbut possesses a U-shaped slide with two parallel sliding tubes, rather than just one. Daniel Lassalle is a baroque trombonist from France. He is joint artistic director of Les Sacqueboutiers (with Jean-Pierre Canihac) and professor of trombone at the Conservatoire National de Région de Toulouse.
