Les Hunter (politician)
Leslie William Hunter (2 December 1927 – 30 April 2012) was a New Zealand politician for the Social Credit Political League. Early life Hunter was born in Foxton in 1927. At the age of four his family moved to Palmerston North where he attended primary and secondary school. He then proceeded to work as a poultry farmer. Political career Hunter was the Social Credit's deputy leader in the 1970s under Bruce Beetham, also serving as the party's parliamentary research officer. Hunter stood as the Social Credit candidate in four elections. He ran for election in 1969 in Palmerston North, for Ruahine in 1972 and 1975, and in Bay of Islands in 1984. From 1972 Hunter was also Social Credit's finance spokesman. Later life and death In the 1980s Hunter and his wife Pat moved to Kaikohe where they owned and ran a book and stationery shop. Social Credit Party (New Zealand)
The New Zealand Social Credit Party (sometimes called "Socred") is a political party which served as the country's Third party (politics), third party from the 1950s through into the 1980s. The party held a number of seats in the New Zealand House of Representatives, although never more than two at a time. It renamed itself the New Zealand Democratic Party from 1985 to 2018, and was for a time part of the Alliance (New Zealand political party), Alliance from 1991 to 2002. It returned to the Social Credit name in 2018. The party is based on the ideas of social credit, an economic theory established by Major C. H. Douglas. Pyes Pa
Pyes Pa is a suburb of Tauranga, New Zealand. The suburb is located in the southern part of Tauranga about 40.3 km from Rotorua. It includes The Lakes, Cheyne Road and the TECT All Terrain Park. It is named for Captain Charles Pye (1820 - 1876), who was in the Colonial Defence Force cavalry during the New Zealand Wars. History The New Zealand Wars battle site of Te Ranga is located in a paddock on Pyes Pa Road (SH36) near the corner of Joyce Road, about 10 km south of Tauranga. On 21 June 1864, British forces decisively defeated local Māori there. The British defeat at Pukehinahina (Gate Pā) on 29 April 1864 had shocked New Zealand's European settlers. Lieutenant-General Duncan Cameron returned to Auckland, leaving Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Greer in command of the British garrison on the Te Papa peninsula. Foxton, New Zealand
Foxton ( mi, Te Awahou) is a town in the Manawatū-Whanganui region of New Zealand - on the lower west coast of the North Island, in the Horowhenua district, southwest of Palmerston North and just north of Levin. The town is located close to the banks of the Manawatu River. It is situated on State Highway 1, roughly in the middle between Tongariro National Park and Wellington. The slightly smaller coastal settlement of Foxton Beach is considered part of Foxton, and is located to the west, on the Tasman Sea coastline. The population was as of Foxton has preserved its heritage - both Maori and Pakeha - through its parks, heritage buildings and four museums. The Manawatu River Loop and estuary creates an environment that features walkways and Ramsar wetlands with 93 species of birds. Kaikohe
Kaikohe is the seat of the Far North District of New Zealand, situated on State Highway 12 about 260 km from Auckland. It is the largest inland town and highest community above sea level in the Northland Region. With a population of over 4000 people it is a shopping and service centre for an extensive farming district and is sometimes referred to as "the hub of the north".
