Les Coates
Leslie Robert Coates (9 June 1898 – 20 February 1976) was an Australian politician. Born in Brighton to market gardener Robert Brooke Coates and Jane Annie Boxshall, he attended Moorabbin State School and became a cigar maker. Around 1924 he married Hilda Grace Hedberg, with whom he had two children. He served on Moorabbin City Council from 1947 to 1974, including four periods as mayor (1949–50, 1953–54, 1961–62 and 1969–70). He was a delegate to the Trades Hall Council and in 1952 was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Dandenong, serving until 1955, when he unsuccessfully attempted to transfer to Moorabbin. He contested the federal seat of Higinbotham in 1955 and Moorabbin in 1958 and 1961, but was not able to re-enter parliament. After losing preselection for Moorabbin in 1964 he left the Labor Party, rejoining in 1972. Coates died in 1976 at Moorabbin and was buried at Cheltenham Cheltenham (), also known as ... Brighton, Victoria
Brighton is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 11 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Bayside local government area. Brighton recorded a population of 23,252 at the 2021 census. Brighton is named after Brighton in England. History In England, on 29 August 1840, Henry Dendy (1800–81) purchased of Port Phillip land at £1 per acre, sight unseen, under the terms of the short-lived Special Survey regulations. Dendy arrived on 5 February 1841 to claim his land. The area was known as Dendy's Special Survey. The area Dendy was compelled to take, called "Waterville", was bound by the coastline to the west and the present day North Road, East Boundary Road and South Road. A town was surveyed in mid-1841, defined by the crescent-shaped street layout which remains today, and subdivided allotments were offered for sale. A cigar is a rolled bundle of dried and fermented tobacco leaves made to be smoked. Cigars are produced in a variety of sizes and shapes. Since the 20th century, almost all cigars are made of three distinct components: the filler, the binder leaf which holds the filler together, and a wrapper leaf, which is often the highest quality leaf used. The Parliament of Victoria is the bicameral legislature of the Australian state of Victoria that follows a Westminster-derived parliamentary system.
