Les Chutes-de-la-Chaudière-Est is a borough of the city of Lévis, Quebec. It was created on January 1, 2002. It corresponds to the eastern part of the former Les Chutes-de-la-Chaudière Regional County Municipality. A borough is an administrative division in various English-speaking countries. In principle, the term ''borough'' designates a self-governing walled town, although in practice, official use of the term varies widely. History In the Middle Ages, boroughs were settlements in England that were granted some self-government; burghs were the Scottish equivalent. In medieval England, boroughs were also entitled to elect members of parliament. The use of the word ''borough'' probably derives from the burghal system of Alfred the Great. Lévis, Quebec
Lévis () is a city in eastern Quebec, Canada, located on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, opposite Quebec City. A ferry links Old Quebec with Old Lévis, and two bridges, the Quebec and the Pierre-Laporte, connect western Lévis with Quebec City. The population in July 2017 was 144,147. Its current incarnation was founded on January 1, 2002, as the result of a merger among ten cities, including the older city of Lévis founded in 1861. Lévis is also the name of a territory equivalent to a regional county municipality (TE) and census division (CD) of Quebec, coextensive with the city of Lévis. Its geographical code is 25 as a census division, and 251 as an RCM-equivalent territory. Les Chutes-de-la-Chaudière Regional County Municipality
Les Chutes-de-la-Chaudière was a former regional county municipality and census division in Quebec. It and Desjardins Regional County Municipality were formed from the division of Lévis County in the 1980s. It ceased to exist when most of it, along with most of Desjardins RCM, amalgamated into the expanded city of Lévis on January 1, 2002. Charny, Quebec
Charny is a district (''secteur'') within the Les Chutes-de-la-Chaudière-Est borough of the city of Lévis, Quebec. It is located on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, south of Quebec City. Formerly an independent city, Charny was merged with Lévis on January 1, 2002. History Over the last century, Charny has been tremendously influenced socially and economically by the Canadian National Railway which maintains a major national train yard in the town, Joffre Yard. The roundhouse in the yard was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1992. Charny expanded in population during the late 1980s and early 1990s when new neighbourhoods were surveyed and houses were built. Charny has reached regional exposure many times over the last twenty years struggling with Alex Couture Inc., a plant which buys animal corpses in order to recycle them, producing salable by-products. Saint-Romuald, Quebec
Saint-Romuald is a district within the Les Chutes-de-la-Chaudière-Est borough of Lévis, Quebec, Canada, located on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River across from Quebec City. The district was formerly a town (Saint-Romuald d'Etchemin), but was amalgamated with Lévis on January 1, 2002. The largest oil refinery in eastern Canada, owned by Valero Energy Corporation, is located in Saint-Romuald. The Quebec Bridge connects Saint-Romuald to Sainte-Foy, a district of Quebec City. The Etchemin River flows into the Saint Lawrence River at Saint-Romuald. The district is named after a Roman Catholic parish, which is named in honour of Saint Romuald (c. 951–June 19, 1027), the founder of the Camaldolese order. Saint-Jean-Chrysostome is a sector within the Les Chutes-de-la-Chaudière-Est, Lévis, Les Chutes-de-la-Chaudière-Est borough of the city of Lévis, Quebec, Lévis in central Quebec, Canada south of Quebec City on the south bank of the Saint Lawrence River.
