Les Carbarns
Leslie John Patience Carbarns (1 April 1891 – 3 May 1970) was an Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda and Hawthorn in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Early life The son of Thomas Carbarns (1855–1909) and Fanny Carbarns (1855–1925), nee Emery, Leslie John Patience Carbarns was born at Tungamah on 1 April 1891. He was educated at Scotch College, Melbourne where he played football for the first XVIII and then played football with South Yarra in the Metropolitan League from 1912 to 1914. In 1920, Carbarns married Elizabeth Mary Crawford (1887–1951). World War I Carbarns enlisted to serve in World War I in 1915 and he served in Egypt, Gallipoli and Palestine with the 10th Reinforcements from 1915 to 1919. Tungamah is a town in the Goulburn Valley region of northern Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Shire of Moira local government area, from the state capital, Melbourne. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. The Hawthorn Football Club, nicknamed the Hawks, is a professional Australian rules football club based in Mulgrave, Victoria, that competes in the Australian Football League (AFL). Victorian Football League (1897–1989)
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). The 1925 VFL season was the 29th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The league expanded to twelve clubs, with , and all newly admitted from the VFA to increase the league's size to its highest since its inception.
