Leroy Grant
Leroy Grant (April 15, 1889 – May 7, 1951) was a Negro leagues first baseman for several years before the founding of the first Negro National League, and in its first few seasons. Grant started playing for the Chicago American Giants at the age of 22, then went to Cuba during the Winter to play for the Club Fé team. A first baseman, abbreviated 1B, is the player on a baseball or softball team who fields the area nearest first base, the first of four bases a baserunner must touch in succession to score a run. The ''Pittsburgh Courier'' was an African-American weekly newspaper published in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from 1907 until October 22, 1966. By the 1930s, the ''Courier'' was one of the leading black newspapers in the United States. It was acquired in 1965 by John H. Sengstacke, a major black publisher and owner of the ''Chicago Defender''. He re-opened the paper in 1967 as the '' New Pittsburgh Courier'', making it one of his four newspapers for the African-American audience.
