Lernaeodiscidae
In the past, Lernaeodiscidae has been considered a family of barnacles. Research published in 2021 by Chan et al. resulted in the genera of Lernaeodiscidae being merged with that of Peltogastridae, which now contains the members of both families. As an exception, the species ''Triangulus galatheae'' was moved to the genus ''Paratriangulus'' in the family Triangulidae. See also Peltogastridae The Peltogastridae are a family (biology), family of barnacles belonging to the bizarre parasitism, parasitic and highly synapomorphy, apomorphic infraclass Rhizocephala. Peltogastridae
The Peltogastridae are a family (biology), family of barnacles belonging to the bizarre parasitism, parasitic and highly synapomorphy, apomorphic infraclass Rhizocephala. The Peltogastridae are by far the largest family of Rhizocephala. They comprise 14 genera, 3 of which (''Lernaeodiscus'', ''Septodiscus'', and ''Triangulus'') were moved from the family Lernaeodiscidae. Genera These genera belong to the family Peltogastridae: * ''Briarosaccus'' Boschma, 1930 * ''Dipterosaccus'' Van Kampen & Boschma, 1925 * ''Galatheascus'' Boschma, 1929 * ''Lernaeodiscus'' Müller, 1862 * ''Ommatogaster'' Yoshida & Osawa, 2011 * ''Paratriangulus'' Høeg & Glenner, 2019 * ''Peltogaster'' Rathke, 1842 * ''Pterogaster'' Van Baal, 1937 * ''Septodiscus'' Van Baal, 1937 * ''Septosaccus'' Duboscq, 1912 * ''Temnascus'' Boschma, 1951 * ''Tortugaster'' Reinhard, 1948 * ''Trachelosaccus'' Boschma, 1928 * ''Triangulopsis'' Guérin-Ganivet, 1911 References External links

Family (taxonomy)
Family ( la, familia, plural ') is one of the eight major hierarchical taxonomic ranks in Linnaean taxonomy. It is classified between order and genus. A family may be divided into subfamilies, which are intermediate ranks between the ranks of family and genus. The official family names are Latin in origin; however, popular names are often used: for example, walnut trees and hickory trees belong to the family Juglandaceae, but that family is commonly referred to as the "walnut family". What belongs to a family—or if a described family should be recognized at all—are proposed and determined by practicing taxonomists. There are no hard rules for describing or recognizing a family, but in plants, they can be characterized on the basis of both vegetative and reproductive features of plant species. Taxonomists often take different positions about descriptions, and there may be no broad consensus across the scientific community for some time. The publishing of new data and opini ...

Barnacle
A barnacle is a type of arthropod constituting the subclass Cirripedia in the subphylum Crustacea, and is hence related to crabs and lobsters. Barnacles are exclusively marine, and tend to live in shallow and tidal waters, typically in erosive settings. They are sessile (nonmobile) and most are suspension feeders, but those in infraclass Rhizocephala are highly specialized parasites on crustaceans. They have four nektonic (active swimming) larval stages. Around 1,000 barnacle species are currently known. The name is Latin, meaning "curl-footed". The study of barnacles is called cirripedology. Description Barnacles are encrusters, attaching themselves temporarily to a hard substrate or a symbiont such as a whale ( whale barnacles), a sea snake ('' Platylepas ophiophila''), or another crustacean, like a crab or a lobster (Rhizocephala). The most common among them, "acorn barnacles" ( Sessilia), are sessile where they grow their shells directly onto the substrate. Peduncul ...
