Leopold Engel
Leopold Engel was a German writer and occultist. Early life Engel was born in St Petersburg, Russia. His father was Karl Dietrich Engel (1824–1913), a violinist who in 1846 became Konzertmeister (leader) of the orchestra of the Imperial Russian Theatre. Career Leopold Engel went to Germany, finally settling in Dresden where he wrote extensively on the Faust legend. He became a follower of mysticus Jakob Lorber (1800–1864) who wrote ten volumes of "inspired" teachings. In 1891 Engel himself heard an "inner voice" which commanded him to write an 11th volume of Lorber's work, ''The Great Gospel of John''. During the 1890s he became involved with Theodor Reuss in reviving the Illuminati in Germany, setting up an irregular masonic lodge which they called the Ludwig Lodge. Theodor Reuss
Albert Karl Theodor Reuss (; June 28, 1855 – October 28, 1923) also known by his neo-Gnostic bishop title of Carolus Albertus Theodorus Peregrinus was an Anglo-German tantric occultist, freemason, journalist, singer and head of Ordo Templi Orientis. Early years Reuss was the son of an innkeeper Franz Xavier Reuss and his wife Eva Barbara Margaret Wagner at Augsburg. He was a professional singer in his youth, and was introduced to Ludwig II of Bavaria, in 1873. He took part in the first performance of Wagner's ''Parsifal'' at Bayreuth in 1882. The Great Gospel Of John
The ''Great Gospel of John'' (in the original German published as ''Das große Evangelium Johannis '' or ''Großes Evangelium Johannes'') is a neo-revelationist text by Jakob Lorber, extending to about 5,500 pages in print, published in ten volumes. It is the major work of Lorber's "New Revelation" based on interior locution. It was written in Austria, in the town Graz, from August 1851 until July 1864. Leopold Engel in 1891 wrote an addendum in an "11th volume", purportedly also based on interior locution. Supporters of the authenticity of Lorber's revelation are divided as to the authenticity of Engel's. Jakob Lorber
Jakob Lorber (22 July 1800 – 23 August 1864) was a Christian mystic and visionary from the Duchy of Styria, who promoted liberal Universalism. He referred to himself as "God's scribe". He wrote that on 15 March 1840 he began hearing an " inner voice" from the region of his heart and thereafter transcribed what it said. By the time of his death 24 years later he had written manuscripts equivalent to more than 10,000 pages in print. His writings were published posthumously as amounting to a "New Revelation", and the contemporary "Lorber movement" forms one of the major neo-revelationist sects, mostly active in German-speaking Europe, although parts of Lorber's writings have also been translated into more than 20 languages (according to the website of the Lorber Publisher).
