Leopold is the modern form of the Germanic languages, Germanic name ''Luitbald'', composed of two stems, common to Germanic names. The first part is related to Old High German ''wikt:liut, liut'' meaning "people", the second part ''wikt:bald, bald'' or ''wikt:balt, balt'' is of Germanic origin and means "brave". The name is not related to the names Leon (given name), Leon and Leonard which mean lion. The name gradually spread across Western Europe and during the 16th century it became popular in the southern Holy Roman Empire, due to the influence of the Margraves of Austria from the Babenberg dynasty. ''King Leopold's Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror and Heroism in Colonial Africa'' (1998) is a best-selling popular history book by Adam Hochschild that explores the exploitation of the Congo Free State by King Leopold II of Belgium between 1885 and 1908, as well as the large-scale atrocities committed during that period. USS ''Leopold'' (DE-319) was an built for the United States Navy during World War II. Named for Ensign Robert Lawrence Leopold to date it is the only U.S. Naval vessel to bear the name. Namesake Robert Lawrence Leopold was born on 11 November 1916 in Louisville, Kentucky. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve 10 July 1940. Following training in Wyoming, he was appointed midshipman on 16 September 1940 and commissioned Ensign on 12 December. Reporting for duty on board the two weeks later, Leopold was killed in action on 7 December 1941 during the Attack on Pearl Harbor. Leopold is a residential eastern suburb of Geelong and is a gateway to the Bellarine Peninsula. At the 2016 census, Leopold had a population of 12,814. Prince Leopold Island ( iu, ᐅᑉᐸᐃᑦ, ) is an island in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut, Canada. It is located in Lancaster Sound at the junction of Prince Regent Inlet and Barrow Strait. Somerset Island is situated to the southwest; Port Leopold, an abandoned trading post, is the closest landmark. The island is significant as a summer habitat and breeding ground for large populations of several arctic bird species. ''Leopold the Cat'' (russian: Кот Леопольд, ''Kot Leopold'') is a Soviet/Russian animated short film series about a good-natured and prudent cat, Leopold. Leopold always wears a bow tie even when swimming. Throughout the series, he has to deal with two mischievous mice, Grey and White (Mitya and Motya according to an early script version, but the cartoons themselves mention no names). The animation was produced at T/O Ekran in 1975 - 1987 and its runtime is 87 min (10 episodes). As of 1987, there were 11 episodes in total. Eventually, in 1995, most of the episodes were released on DVD. It was directed by Anatoly Reznikov (russian: Анатолий Резников), and the screenplay was written by Arkady Khait. The Leopold Museum, housed in the Museumsquartier in Vienna, Austria, is home to one of the largest collections of modern Austrian art, featuring artists such as Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka and Richard Gerstl. ''King Leopold's Soliloquy'' is a 1905 pamphlet by American author Mark Twain. Its subject is King Leopold's rule over the Congo Free State. A work of political satire harshly condemnatory of his actions, it ostensibly recounts a fictional monologue of Leopold II speaking in his own defense. Content King Leopold II raves madly about the good things that he says he has done for the people of the Congo Free State, including the disbursement of millions on religion and art. He says he had come to Congo with piety "oozing" from "every pore", that he had only wanted to convert the people to Christianity, that he had wanted to stop the slave trade.
