Leonte Filipescu
Leonte Filipescu (September 18, 1895 – April 13, 1922) was one of the leaders of the early Romanian communist movement, shot in custody by the Romanian authorities. Leonte Filipescu was born in a family of workers in Bârlad, Romania. He worked from an early age, first as a dock labourer in the port of Galați, and after 1910 as a waiter in Bucharest, Romania's capital. In Bucharest he met several trade unionist active in the waiter's guild, such as Gheorghe Niculescu-Mizil, Iancu Olteanu, and Marian Cristescu, who introduced him to socialist ideas. He took part in several waiters' protests, and, after the start of World War I, in the anti-war demonstrations organised in Bucharest by the Socialists. In the meantime, he also joined the Social Democratic Party, sitting on its far left wing. Leonte Moldovan
Leonte Moldovan (February 18, 1865 – September 18, 1943) was an Austrian Empire-born Romanian lawyer, journalist and politician. Moldovan was born in Șinca Veche, a village near Făgăraș in Transylvania. He moved with his family to the Romanian Old Kingdom in 1866, receiving citizenship in 1895. He returned to his native region for gymnasium, attending school at Brașov from 1876 to 1885. Moldovan then went to the University of Bucharest, where he studied literature and law. He taught history in Brăila from 1887 to 1903 and, from 1903, practiced as a lawyer. A member of the National Liberal Party (PNL), Moldovan was elected senator in 1912 and became a deputy in 1914. After World War I, he headed the Brăila PNL chapter, and was the city's elected mayor from 1922 to 1926. In 1933, he became a senator by right, and served as Senate President from February 1934 to November 1935. Leonte Răutu
Leonte Răutu (until 1945 Lev Nikolayevich (Nicolaievici) Oigenstein; February 28, 1910 – 1993) was a Bessarabian-born Romanian communist activist and propagandist. He was chief ideologist of the Romanian Communist Party ("Workers' Party") during the rule of Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej, and one of his country's few high-ranking communists to have studied Marxism from the source. His adventurous youth, with two prison terms served for illegal political activity, culminated in his self-exile to the Soviet Union, where he spent the larger part of World War II. Specializing in agitprop and becoming friends with communist militant Ana Pauker, Răutu made his way back to Romania during the communization process of the late 1940s, and became a feared potentate of the Romanian communist regime. Leonte Tismăneanu
Leonte Tismăneanu (born Leonid Tisminetski, or Tisminețki; 1913–1981) was a Romanian communist activist and propagandist. Born into a Jewish family in Soroca, Bessarabia, Russian Empire (now in Moldova),Badin he joined the Romanian Communist Party (PCR) in the early 1930s. He engaged in illegal communist activities in Bucharest, Galaţi, Brăila and Soroca. Later, he fought as a volunteer in the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War, losing his right arm at the age of 24. In 1939, Tisminetski left for the Soviet Union, where he became a student of the Moscow State Linguistic University. After the start of Operation Barbarossa, in which Romania took part (''see Romania during World War II''), he worked with Ana Pauker, Leonte Răutu, and Vasile Luca for the Romanian language branch of Radio Moscow, first as a newsreader, then as a writer. Gheorghe Leonte (born Fetești, 12 February 1963) is a former Romanian rugby union footballer. He played as a prop. Leonte first played for Steaua Bucuresti, until he moved to France, where he represented Miélan-Mirande and CS Vienne, the last team of his player career. He had 57 caps for Romania, scoring 4 tries, 19 points in aggregate, from 12 March 1984, in a 28-22 win over Scotland, in Bucharest, in a friendly match, to 3 June 1995, in a 42-3 defeat to Australia, in Stellenbosch, for the 1995 Rugby World Cup finals.
