Leonard Lindsay
Leonard Lewis Lindsay (April 6, 1909 – December 16, 1988), nicknamed "Sloppy", was an American Negro league first baseman between 1935 and 1946. A native of Greensboro, North Carolina, Lindsay made his Negro leagues debut in 1935 for the Newark Dodgers. In 1943, he split time between the Cincinnati Clowns and Birmingham Black Barons, and started all seven games of the 1943 Negro World Series for Birmingham. Lindsay finished his career in 1946 with the Indianapolis Clowns. A first baseman, abbreviated 1B, is the player on a baseball or softball team who fields the area nearest first base, the first of four bases a baserunner must touch in succession to score a run. The first baseman is responsible for the majority of plays made at that base. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the first baseman is assigned the number 3. Also called first sacker or cornerman, the first baseman is ideally a tall player who throws left-handed and possesses good flexibility and quick reflexes. 1943 Negro World Series
In the 1943 Negro World Series, the Washington Homestead Grays, champions of the Negro National League beat the Birmingham Black Barons, champions of the Negro American League, four games to three, with one tie. The games were played in seven different cities. Background The Negro American League held a Championship Series for the first time, matching the champion of the first half of the season with the second half champion. Neither league would have a postseason series to determine the participant in the World Series until 1948, the last held Negro World Series (both the American and National Leagues would hold a series, which coincidentally saw Birmingham and Homestead win the pennant). Greensboro (; formerly Greensborough) is a city in and the county seat of Guilford County, North Carolina, United States. It is the third-most populous city in North Carolina after Charlotte and Raleigh, the 69th-most populous city in the United States, and the largest city in the Piedmont Triad metropolitan region. Negro League
The Negro leagues were United States professional baseball leagues comprising teams of African Americans and, to a lesser extent, Latin Americans. The term may be used broadly to include professional black teams outside the leagues and it may be used narrowly for the seven relatively successful leagues beginning in 1920 that are sometimes termed "Negro Major Leagues". In the late 19th century, the baseball color line developed in professional baseball, excluding African Americans from league play. In 1885, the Cuban Giants formed the first black professional baseball team.
