Leonard A. Gordon
Leonard Abraham Gordon is a historian of South Asia, especially of Bengal, whose 1990 book ''Brothers Against the Raj: A Biography of Indian Nationalist Leaders Sarat and Subhas Chandra Bose'' is considered the definitive biography of Subhas Chandra Bose. Education and career Gordon graduated from Amherst College, and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University. He was a professor of history at Brooklyn College, City University of New York, and has emeritus status there now. He was also the Director of the Southern Asia Institute at Columbia University. Gordon's revised Harvard dissertation, ''Bengal: the Nationalist Movement'' won the (now discontinued) biennial Watumull Prize of the American Historical Association in 1974, a prize recognizing "the best book on the history of India originally published in the United States." South Asia
South Asia is the southern subregion of Asia, which is defined in both geographical and ethno-cultural terms. Indian National Army
The Indian National Army (INA; ''Azad Hind Fauj'' ; 'Free Indian Army') was a collaborationist armed force formed by Indian collaborators and Imperial Japan on 1 September 1942 in Southeast Asia during World War II. Its aim was to secure Indian independence from British rule. It fought alongside Japanese soldiers in the latter's campaign in the Southeast Asian theatre of WWII. The army was first formed in 1942 under Rash Behari Bose by Indian PoWs of the British Indian Army captured by Japan in the Malayan campaign and at Singapore. This first INA, which had been handed over to Rash Behari Bose, collapsed and was disbanded in December that year after differences between the INA leadership and the Japanese military over its role in Japan's war in Asia. Rash Behari Bose handed over INA to Subhas Chandra Bose. It was revived under the leadership of Subhas Chandra Bose after his arrival in Southeast Asia in 1943. Death Of Subhas Chandra Bose
Indian nationalist leader Subhas Chandra Bose died on 18 August 1945 from third-degree burns sustained after the bomber in which he was being transported as a guest of Lieutenant General Tsunamasa Shidei of the Imperial Japanese Kwantung Army crashed upon take off from the airport in Taihoku, Japanese-occupied Formosa, now Taipei, Taiwan. The chief pilot, copilot, and General Shidei were instantly killed. Bose, who had become soaked in gasoline before exiting the burning bomber, was transported to the Nanmon Military Hospital south of Taihoku, where his extensive upper-body burns were treated for six hours by the chief-surgeon Dr Taneyoshi Yoshimi, two other doctors Dr Truruta and Dr Ishii, and half a dozen technical staff and nurses. Joyce Lebra
Joyce Lebra (December 21, 1925 – October 10, 2021), also known as Joyce Chapman Lebra, was an American historian of Japan and India. Biography Lebra spent her childhood in Honolulu and received her B.A. and M.A. in Asian studies from the University of Minnesota. She received a Ph.D. in Japanese history from Harvard/Radcliffe, and was the first woman Ph.D. in Japanese history in the U.S. She lived in Japan a total of ten years and three and a half in India doing research on the history of Japan and India. She was professor of Japanese history and Indian history at the University of Colorado until her retirement. She led three research teams to Asia to research women’s roles in the work force, each of which resulted in a book (1977, 1980 and 1984). She has written several other books including works on the Indian National Army and Lakshmibai, the Rani of Jhansi, and has written chapters in three books and some fifty articles in scholarly journals.
