Leo Gately
Leo Francis Gately (15 June 1937 – 25 August 2021) was an Australian politician. He was born at West Wyalong to Patrick Leo Joseph Gately and his wife Eleanor Agnes, ''née'' Barton. On 3 September 1960, he married Helen Gallagher, with whom he had four children. From 1971 to 1973, he sat on Newcastle City Council and served as a member of the New South Wales Police Force, before moving to Queensland, where he became involved with the National Party. He served one term (1986–89) as the member for Currumbin in the Queensland Legislative Assembly before being defeated at the 1989 state election by the Liberal candidate, Trevor Coomber Trevor McDougall Coomber (born 13 June 1949) is a former Australian politician. Currumbin is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The district lies in the south-east corner of the state, along the New South Wales border. The district takes in southern parts of the Gold Coast and much of its hinterland. It includes the suburbs of Currumbin, Coolangatta, Elanora and Tugun as well as the rural Currumbin Valley and Tallebudgera Valley. The electorate was first contested in 1986. 1989 Queensland State Election
The 1989 Queensland state election was held in the Australian state of Queensland on 2 December 1989 to elect the 89 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. This was the first election following the downfall of seven-term premier Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen at the end of 1987. The government was led by Premier and leader of the National Party, Russell Cooper; the opposition was led by Opposition Leader and leader of the Labor Party, Wayne Goss, while the Liberal Party was led by Angus Innes. The National government, which had been in power since the 1957 election and had governed in its own right since the dissolution of the state coalition at the 1983 election, was defeated; the election was a landslide win for the Labor Party, which gained 24 seats. The Parliament of Queensland is the legislature of Queensland, Australia. As provided under the Constitution of Queensland, the Parliament consists of the Monarch of Australia and the Legislative Assembly. It has been the only unicameral state legislature in the country since the upper chamber, the Legislative Council, was abolished in 1922. The Legislative Assembly sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Brisbane. The Liberal Party of Australia (Queensland Division), branded as Liberal Queensland, was the Queensland division of the Liberal Party of Australia until 2008. It was initially formed in October 1943 as the Queensland People's Party (QPP), which then absorbed the disbanded Queensland branch of the United Australia Party in 1944. In 1945, the QPP had an agreement with the newly formed Liberal Party, where in the "federal sphere", QPP would be the Queensland division of the Liberal Party and would run its candidates under the Liberal Party banner in federal elections. However, in the "state sphere", it would continue to exist individually under its own banner. In July 1949, the QPP was renamed to reflect its status as the Queensland division of the Liberal Party. Queensland Legislative Assembly
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). Trevor Coomber
Trevor McDougall Coomber (born 13 June 1949) is a former Australian politician. He was born in Charleville to schoolteacher Laurence Edward Coomber and Sybil Harding, ''née'' Lightbody, a secretary. He was educated at public schools in Pelican, Lowmead and Rosedale and at high schools in Bundaberg and Mount Gravatt. In 1970 he graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Pharmacy, and began work as a pharmacist in Brisbane. On 8 April 1972 he married Roberta Anne Richardson, also a pharmacist; they had four children before their separation. Coomber moved to the Gold Coast in 1973 and to Palm Beach in 1974, where he was a member of the Beach Protection Authority of Queensland and patron of several community groups. A member of the Liberal Party since 1974, he resigned from the party in 1981 over retrospective taxation.
