Lemonville, Texas
Lemonville is a ghost town that was the site of the Lemon Lumber Company in northern Orange County, Texas, United States, in the southeastern part of the state. Sometimes referred to as ''Lemon'', it is located north of Orange and just east of Mauriceville. The town plat was filed in 1901 by a man named William Manuel, with the location chosen for its proximity to the tracks of the Kansas City Southern Railroad. In 1902, when the population was about 300, a post office was established, with Cornelius P. Ryan as first postmaster. In 1900, the mill had a capacity of per day. The lumber baron Alexander Gilmer purchased the mill in 1904, and by the following year production was increased to per day with the addition of new equipment. Orange County is a county located in the very southeastern corner of the U.S. state of Texas, sharing a boundary with Louisiana, within the Golden Triangle of Texas. Mauriceville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Orange County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,983 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Beaumont– Port Arthur Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Mauriceville is located at (30.215616, -93.873095). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , all land. Historical development The site was established when the two lines known as Texarkana and Fort Smith Railway and the Orange and Northwestern Railway were built in 1898 and 1902 respectively. This community was named for Maurice Miller, the son of the Orange and Northwestern's first president. Alexander Gilmer
Alexander Gilmer (September 7, 1829 – July 30, 1906) was a sawmiller that became one of the United States' most successful individual timberland owners in his era. Nicknamed "Sandy", he was born in County Armagh, Ireland, the son of George and Jane Gilmer. He immigrated to Georgia at the age of seventeen where he constructed shipmasts for the French government with his brother John. Together, they built a steamboat to work the Chattahoochee, but suffered a major setback when it sank, leaving Gilmer almost penniless. In the late 1840s, he migrated to Orange, Texas, where he entered the shipbuilding business with his cousin George C. Gilmer. The two would shortly after enter the mercantile business and continue until the Civil War. Alexander participated in the war as a Confederate blockade runner in The Battle of Sabine Pass.
