Leighton Railway Station
Leighton Station was a railway station on the Transperth network in Perth, Western Australia. It was located on the Fremantle line around from Perth, serving the Fremantle suburb of North Fremantle. History Leighton Station opened on and was named after Leighton's Crossingwhich was named for Ann Leighton, its gatekeeper from 1881 to 1885. Along with the rest of the Fremantle line, Leighton closed on 1 September 1979 due to low passenger counts. It reopened in 1983 with the rest of the line following a change of government. During the 1980s when the Fremantle, Midland and Armadale lines were being electrified, the old North Fremantle station above Tydeman Road (where the current freight horseshoe curve is) was replaced by a new North Fremantle station constructed north of the current one located north of Tydeman Road. Owned by the state government, it was renamed a number of times to reflect extra responsibility for tram and ferry operations that it assumed and later relinquished. Westrail was the trading name of WAGR from September 1975 until December 2000, when the WAGR's freight division and the Westrail name and logo were privatised. Its freight operations were privatised in December 2000 with the remaining passenger operations transferred to the Public Transport Authority in July 2003. Transperth Trains
Transperth Train Operations is a division of the Public Transport Authority of Western Australia. It is responsible for operating Perth’s urban passenger rail system, as part of the Transperth network. Perth's passenger rail network covers of track with 90 stations on 8 lines across the city's greater metropolitan area. Over the last three decades the rail network has undergone rapid expansion. Between 1981 and 2016 the network tripled in route length and was electrified. The Northern Suburbs Railway was opened in 1993 and was progressively extended, while the new Mandurah Line was opened in 2007. 1979–1983 Fremantle Railway Line Closure
The railway passenger service between Perth and Fremantle was closed from 2 September 1979 to 29 July 1983 by the Charles Court government of Western Australia. The closure was deeply unpopular and became a key campaign issue in the 1982 state government election. Following a change of government, passenger services resumed on 29 July 1983. The re-opening of the railway was the beginning of a shift in metropolitan transport policy that saw bipartisan support for the revitalisation and expansion of Perth's passenger railway system. The campaign against the closure of the railway was led by Peter Newman, a local Government councillor and environmental scientist. Transperth is the brand name of the public transport system serving the city and suburban areas of Perth, the state capital of Western Australia. It is managed by the Public Transport Authority (PTA), a state government organisation. Train operations are done by Transperth Train Operations, a division of the PTA.
