1979–1983 Fremantle Railway Line Closure
The railway passenger service between Perth and Fremantle was closed from 2 September 1979 to 29 July 1983 by the Charles Court government of Western Australia. The closure was deeply unpopular and became a key campaign issue in the 1982 state government election. Following a change of government, passenger services resumed on 29 July 1983. The re-opening of the railway was the beginning of a shift in metropolitan transport policy that saw bipartisan support for the revitalisation and expansion of Perth's passenger railway system. The campaign against the closure of the railway was led by Peter Newman, a local Government councillor and environmental scientist. Transperth is the brand name of the public transport system serving the city and suburban areas of Perth, the state capital of Western Australia. Western Australian Legislative Council
The Western Australian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Western Australia, a state of Australia. It is regarded as a house of review for legislation passed by the Legislative Assembly, the lower house. The two Houses of Parliament sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Perth. Effective on 20 May 2005, for the election of members of the Legislative Council, the State was divided into 6 electoral regions by community of interest —3 metropolitan and 3 rural—each electing 6 members to the Legislative Council.. The Cottesloe Civic Centre lies on the corner of Broome and Napier Streets, Cottesloe, Western Australia. Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR) was the operator of railway services in the state of Western Australia between October 1890 and June 2003. Owned by the state government, it was renamed a number of times to reflect extra responsibility for tram and ferry operations that it assumed and later relinquished. Westrail was the trading name of WAGR from September 1975 until December 2000, when the WAGR's freight division and the Westrail name and logo were privatised. City Of Subiaco
The City of Subiaco is a local government area in Western Australia. It covers an area of approximately 7 km² in inner western metropolitan Perth and lies about 3 km west of the Perth CBD. The City includes the historically working-class suburb of Subiaco centred around Rokeby Road. Since the 1990s the area has been extensively redeveloped and gentrified. History A group of Benedictine monks settled in Subiaco in 1851. They called their monastery New Subiaco after the birthplace of the Benedictine Order – Subiaco, Italy. The City of Fremantle is a local government area in the south of Perth, Western Australia. The City covers an area of , and lies about southwest of the Perth central business district. History The City of Fremantle is named after Charles Fremantle, who in 1829 claimed for George IV "all that part of New Holland (Australia) which is not included within the territory of New South Wales", but who was also charged just three years earlier in April 1826 with raping a 15-year-old girl. For the next twenty-three years they set about constructing roads and many public buildings with the use of convict labour. Tom Dadour
Gabriel Thomas Dadour AM (19 April 1925 – 17 March 2011) was an Australian doctor and politician who was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1971 to 1986, representing the seat of Subiaco. He was a member of the Liberal Party until 1984, when he resigned to sit as an independent. He was remembered as an outspoken member of parliament unafraid of criticising his own party on issues he felt strongly about. Early life Dadour was born in Sydney to Nabeeha (née Zazbeck) and Alexander Elias Dadour, his mother being of Syrian origin. He attended Sydney Boys High School before going to study medicine at the University of Sydney.
