Leidseplein (English: Leiden Square) is a square in central Amsterdam, Netherlands. It lies in the Weteringschans neighborhood (Centrum borough), immediately northeast of the Singelgracht. It is located on the crossroads of the Weteringschans, Marnixstraat and Leidsestraat. Leiden Square Leidseplein is one of the busiest centres for nightlife in the city. Historically, the square was the end of the road from Leiden; it served as a parking lot for horse-drawn traffic. Today, modern traffic travels through the square and side streets are packed with restaurants and nightclubs. The Stadsschouwburg (; Dutch: ''Municipal Theatre'') of Amsterdam is the name of a theatre building at the Leidseplein in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The building is in the neo-Renaissance style dating back to 1894, and is the former home of the National Ballet and Opera. History Rederijkerskamers The first 'rederijkers' (Dutch orators) appeared at the end of the 15th century in Amsterdam. In the 16th century, these so-called precursors of modern theatre organized themselves into 'rederijkerskamers', which can be compared to theater companies. At that time, there were no permanent theater buildings in Amsterdam, and the shipping company cherries performed on temporary stages, from carts (during processions) or in public spaces. Marengo Trial
The Marengo trial or Marengo case () is a trial of leading members of the Mocro Maffia, a Dutch-Moroccan criminal organisation. Seventeen suspects are standing trial for involvement in a number of murders and attempted murders. The name of the trial was picked at random by a computer and relates to a fabric named marengo. Suspects The principal suspect in the trial is Ridouan Taghi, considered to be the sponsor of the organisation. Saïd Razzouki, the alleged right-hand man of Taghi, was arrested in Medellín, Colombia on 7 February 2020, but had not been extradited to the Netherlands at the start of the trial. Alphen Aan Den Rijn Shopping Mall Shooting
On 9 April 2011, six people were killed by a gunman who entered the Ridderhof mall in Alphen aan den Rijn, Netherlands, a town approximately south-west of Amsterdam. Using a rifle, 24-year-old Tristan van der Vlis shot several people and then killed himself, reportedly with a different firearm. There were seven deaths, including the killer, and 17 wounded, making it the deadliest attack in the Netherlands since the 2009 attack on the Dutch royal family. Marnixstraat is a main street in the Dutch city of Amsterdam , on the western border of the Jordaan in the Amsterdam-Centrum. The street is located between Haarlemmerplein and Leidseplein, parallel to Lijnbaansgracht. History Marnixstraat is a main street in Amsterdam which was named after Philips of Marnix, Lord of Saint-Aldegonde, (1538-1598). A large bus depot ( Busstation Elandsgracht) and the main police station are located on the Marnixstraat. The street is located between Haarlemmerplein and Leidseplein, parallel to Lijnbaansgracht. It is from Amsterdam Centraal station. The street is used to host events like the 2022 Pride events.
