Leibu Levin
Leibu Levin (1914 in Câmpulung Moldovenesc, Duchy of Bukovina, Austria-Hungary – 1983 in Herzliya, Israel) was a narrator of Yiddish literature, singer and composer who wrote in Yiddish. During his last years, he emigrated to Israel. Levin was born in the town of Campulung in 1914. In 1919 he moved to Czernowitz. He studied Yiddish language and literature in the Seminar of the "Yiddisher Shul-Farayn" and at the same time appeared with recitals of Yiddish prose and poetry, often singing his own melodies. Levin's first recitals were warmly acclaimed by the linguist and philologist Dr. Haim Gininger. In a long article, published in the literary magazine "Di Vokh" on January 31, 1935, he wrote: "Leibu Levin showed himself to be an excellent interpreter of Yiddish poetry... Levin is perhaps the first interpreter of Manger. Never before have we been so intoxicated by the specific Manger landscape and its fragrance as when Levin recited Manger's ballades..." Câmpulung Moldovenesc (; formerly spelled ''Cîmpulung Moldovenesc'') is a town in Suceava County, northeastern Romania. It is situated in the historical region of Bukovina. Nechama Lifshitz (Russian: Нехама Юделевна Лифшиц, Hebrew: נחמה ליפשיץ) (born 1927 in Kaunas, Lithuania, died 2017 in Tel Aviv, Israel) was a Yiddish language and later Hebrew language soprano and art song performer who came to be a key representative of Soviet Jewish culture in the 1950s and 1960s. Rehabilitation (russian: реабилитация, transliterated in English as ''reabilitatsiya'' or academically rendered as ''reabilitacija'') was a term used in the context of the former Soviet Union and the post-Soviet states. Beginning after the death of Stalin in 1953, the government undertook the political and social restoration, or political rehabilitation, of persons who had been repressed and criminally prosecuted without due basis. It restored the person to the state of acquittal. In many cases, rehabilitation was posthumous, as thousands of victims had been executed or died in labor camps. The government also rehabilitated several minority populations which it had relocated under Stalin, and allowed them to return to their former territories and in some cases restored their autonomy in those regions.
