Legia Warszawa (speedway)
Warsaw Speedway has consisted of several former motorcycle speedway teams and stadia, including the current major venue for the sport at the Stadion Narodowy. History 1923 to 1939 The origins of speedway in Warsaw began with the founding of two clubs in the city; the first in 1923, when the Polish Motorcycle Club (Polski Klub Motorowy, PKM) were formed. One of its founders was Witold Rychter and the club's members took part in motorcycle and car competitions throughout the interwar period. The second club created in Warsaw was in late 1929, when the Legia Warsaw (sports club) created a motorcycle section, officially celebrating its anniversary on 8 December. The first speedway was raced on 9 November 1930 at the Polish Army Stadium. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . Roman Jankowski
Roman Jankowski (born 5 October 1957 in Kościan, Poland) is a speedway rider active from 1976 until 2006. He is a former Polish Champion, having won the title in 1981 and again in 1988. Roman has also represented Poland at the World Team Cup. He rode for the Hackney Hawks in 1980 and 1981. Currently he is the youth coach and manager of Unia Leszno. Roman's three sons, Łukasz, Marcin and Norbert are all speedway riders. Craig Boyce
Craig Boyce (born 2 August 1967 in Sydney, Australia) was a motorcycle speedway rider who primarily rode for the Poole Pirates in the British Elite League. After retiring from riding, Boyce became manager of the Australian national team until 2012. Boyce is a three-time Australian Solo Champion. He won all of his championships (1991, 1996 and 1997) with a 15-point maximum. Career Australia Craig Boyce started riding at the now defunct Liverpool Speedway in western Sydney during the mid-1980s and established himself as one of not only the most promising young riders from New South Wales, but in Australia, finishing third in the 1988 Australian Under-21 Championship. Andy Smith (speedway Rider)
Andrew Smith (born 25 May 1966 in York, England) is a retired British motorcycle speedway rider. Career Andy Smith won the British Speedway Championship three times in a row in 1993, 1994 and 1995, giving him the distinction of being one of only three riders ever to achieve this feat.Oakes, P.(2004). ''British Speedway Who's Who''. Smith also rode in Australia during his career, including the 1990/91 Australian season when he based himself at the Claremont Speedway in Perth, Western Australia. Sam Ermolenko
Guy Allen 'Sudden Sam' Ermolenko (born November 23, 1960 Maywood, California) is a former speedway rider. In 1993 he won the Speedway World Championship in Pocking, Germany.Bamford, R. & Shailes, G. Early career After originally showing an interest in motocross, Ermolenko began riding in the Californian speedway circuit. As he wore red leathers, former World Champion Barry Briggs suggested the nickname of "The mad Russian" (Due to Sam's family roots) although it is believed this is not something Sam himself was keen on. Coming to Europe After some liberal success in California, Ermolenko moved over to the UK to race for the Poole Pirates for the 1983 British League season. Gwardia Warsaw Stadium
The Gwardia Warsaw Stadium ( pl, Stadion Gwardii Warszawa) was a 9,000-capacity multi-use stadium in Warsaw, Poland. It was primarily used for association football and later motorcycle speedway. History The site was originally part of the Mokotów Airport from 1910 to 1947 before being developed for sport. From the 1950s, it contained a football and speedway stadium, training pitches, tennis courts and swimming facilities. In 1955, it was handed over to the Gwardia Warsaw sports club, although the land remained in the ownership of the State Treasury. The facility at Racławicka Street hosted important home fixtures for the Gwardia Warsaw football team, although the most significant ones such as the 1955–56 European Cup and 1957–58 European Cup were held at the Polish Army Stadium.
