Jean Cras
Jean Émile Paul Cras (; 22 May 1879 – 14 September 1932) was a 20th-century French composer and career naval officer. His musical compositions were inspired by his native Brittany, his travels to Africa, and most of all, by his sea voyages. As a naval commander he served with distinction in the Adriatic Campaign during World War I. Biography Life and naval career Cras was born and died in Brest. His father was naval medical officer. He was accepted into the navy at the age of seventeen. As a midshipman cadet on the ''Iphigénie'', he travelled in the Americas, the West Indies and Senegal. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1908. His mathematical skills led to his proposing a number of innovations in technical practices which were adopted by the navy, including his invention of an electrical selector and a navigational plotter protractor known as (aka Cras ruler, Cras protractor, Cras plotter).Michel Fleury, "Jean Cras, an exceptional destiny", ''Polyphème'', T ...

Légende (Enescu)
''Légende'' (1906) is a work for trumpet and piano, composed by George Enescu for the 1906 trumpet competition (''concours'') at the Paris Conservatory and premiered in the competition by students from the trumpet class of Professor Merri Franquin, to whom the work is dedicated. The fact that Enescu found it unnecessary to specify "chromatic trumpet" or "trumpet in C" in the work's title (which might have been normal just a few years earlier) may be seen as a testament to Franquin's influence in adopting of the modern, small trumpet . A simple listing of the performance indications which follow each other in the score indicates the constantly evolving character of the music: ''doux'', ''grave'', ''hésitante'', ''pathétique'', ''gracieux'', ''mouvement agité'', ''chantant'', ''vif'', ''furieusement'', ''rêveur'' . Légende (Wieniawski)
''Légende'' Op. 17 is a showpiece by the Polish violin virtuoso Henryk Wieniawski, written for solo violin and orchestral accompaniment, though it is often performed using a piano reduction as a substitute for the orchestra. It is estimated to have been written in about 1860, though the exact date is unknown. Wieniawski’s ''Légende'' was instrumental in helping to secure his engagement to Isabella Hampton. Initially, Isabella’s parents did not approve of their daughter’s engagement to Wieniawski, but after they heard the piece, they were so impressed that they offered the young couple their blessing, and they were married in 1860. Structure and Analysis The showpiece can be divided into three main sections, loosely following an ABA format. ''Légende'' Op. 17 is in G minor, but the middle section is in the major mode. It is in 3/4 time. The mood is set from the start with a low melody in the horns, accompanied by delicate pizzicato (plucking) in the string sections. Af ...
